My first head keeper gave us a tin of Renardine and urine. Each beat man used to have to with the aid of a bunch of feathers tied to a stick trickle it round our release pens roughly 5 yards out from the wire. We did not have electric fences round our pens but a fox was a great rarity, I killed 2 in 3 years.

I spilt some Renardine on my trousers once when soaking for cones in it, prior to stinking out a rabbit bury.
Wife made me undress outside and the trousers went on the fire

Big discussion on baiting leopards in this latest Africa Podcast. Seems that you leave plenty of smell around and if the leopard chooses to feed its factored in the human smell and is really not worried about it.



As regards deer, I think it really depends on the deer, locality and human interaction. Where deer are regularly exposed to humans through walkers, farm workers etc I don’t think the human smell per se makes a lot of difference.

But if they smell you or your piddle and its in an unusual place that may be an issue. I have come to the conclusion that the smell of a rifle is much more of an issue. You can go for a walk without a rifle, and the deer are not worried. Put a rifle on your shoulder and slight wiff of your scent and off they go.

Smell of exhaled breath could be a bit of a deterrent if you're upwind of the deer.

While I can see the logic of urinating by the popholes, that sounds far too close to the electric fence for my liking...

Anyway, we call them what they are, fee paying private schools and we used to try to beat them up..

Hi all- I have searched the forums but cannot seem to find any discussion of whether in everyone's experience human urine attracts or spooks deer (ie where is the best place to take a pee if you have to go whilst stalking!) - what are people's views on this?

It's turning out to be the best thing to happen . The much needed debate has been started by this utter stupidity.
Some good ,hopefully, will come of it.
