Chamois and Mouflon hunting with a .270

Hello — I hunt a lot of mouflon in Germany. Mouflon are very hard to stop with a shot, so you should definitely aim for the shoulder; otherwise the flight distance can be very long. I use Hornady’s CX Superformance. The .270 is definitely sufficient — but, as already mentioned, be sure to shoot the shoulder.

Super with some concrete input @germanforester :-) what caliber and weight of CX superperformance bullet are you using ?

I have shot Chamois and Mouflon in Macedonia with a .243 100g bullet. No problems

hello @sh1kar - was that lead or non lead bullets ? :)

I’ve shot a bit of mountain game, including a mouflon out in Croatia. I think a .270 a fine choice. But the BC of a 96 gr bullet with long shots in potentially high wind might be challenging. You’re just making life harder than necessary. It’s a great hunt you’re going on and no need to scrimp on bullets and powder. A 145 ELDX or a 140 Berger vld or similar would be my choice. Maybe try a box of the Hornady factory ammo in 145 ELDX if you don’t want to work up a load. Or get someone to make a load for you?

It’s likely that you’ll be shooting 250-350 yards in the mountains. And given adverse conditions, an out of breath hunter with a bad rest and high adrenaline every little helps. The wind drift of an optimal bc bullet will be ~3-6 inches less at these distances at a guess, so worth considering on a roe size animal. Also the wide wounding of a soft lead projectile is preferred, it’s better to anchor the animal if possible. It’s likely that it’s going to take you a long time to get to the shot site, and they can run a long way in very hard terrain for a human.

For what it’s worth my mouflon was shot at 320yrds, I used a 7mm RM with a 162 ELDX bullet.

I **** mine in the Haute Alos in 2004 with a 6.5x57R and 120gr ballistic tip.

A 270 is perfect. I’d prioritise a decent BC as with mountain hunting you’re never sure what the wind is doing. A Hornady 145gr ELD-X would be perfect but any bullet will do if you can shoot it well and judge wind a bit.

Also as you are guided it’s unlikely you’ll be shooting very long distances. Both mine were within 250yds
