Relatively newbie in The Forest of Dean

Hi
It's been a fair few years since I held my FAC and did some vermin and deer stalking (never manage to get a clear shot at a deer!). I gave up as work was talking up far to much time with travel, and a good friend who I used to shoot with passed away.
Making a pact with myself to get back into stalking as time isn't as much an issue, and I really miss being in the field.
Looking forward to catching up with the community and kick starting the failed attempt I made previously.

Cheers

Hi. Well in my area fallow are the most populous so would be an obvious choice, that said I would really like to take a Muntjac, or Roe. On a previous stalk a few years ago I had a Muntjac in my sights but no clear shot due to a fawn

As a newbie the handling of the carcass would be easier. I would love to stalk a big red in a woodlands one day, that's kind of the end goal for my spices list. Ironically Muntjac are my primary as thet are not native to uk, they do significant damage to ground cover in the forest so need control as much if not more than the more established species. It also helps that Muntjac taste good as well as being easier to take from the field. Each to their own though, but for me it depends on what the land needs managing more than my wants.

Fallow are common where I am to. What makes you want to take a Muntjac or Roe first? For me it's Red or Roe as they are native

Welcome! I used to live in the Forest of Dean. You are fortunate if you have permission to shoot. Lots of deer, but lots of walkers and mountain bikers too! Will you get a boar calibre? They do much more damage than the muntjac ever do… why not ask the site which calibre would be best for the forest… 😂😂😂 Seriously though, welcome and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, yeah stalking would be "around" the forest more than in it lol. There is a high seat over looking a field where they take boar no more than a 3 minute walk from my house, and I often hear a shot ring out.
I did some searching on the subject and some say their 30-06 is fine for muntjac as long as shot placement is good, and obviously that calibre is boar ready. Yeah I raised an eyebrow but I'd rather take personal experience when selecting a calibre. My last rife was 243 win, nice and flat but definitely not boar ready.

Nice! I knew a field like that on the edge of Lining Wood. Lots of good advice on here and lots of humour and debate. Lots of help if you want it. Enjoy the journey and say Hi to the forest for me when you’re in the woods. A special place.
