Transfer / buy firearm from N Ireland to Scotland

My father wants to give / transfer a firearm to me - he lives in Nothern Ireland, I’m in Scotland. I have the necessary empty slot on my ticket but not sure of the process and want to make it as hassle-free as possible for him.

Qustions:
Does he need to notify his FLO (if it’s the same system?) in advance or after transfer?
Does this need to go through an RFD?
Can I travel over to NI, transfer directly from him and return with it?

Thanks

Get your father to contact Lavin Guns they'll sort ot out for you.

I have recently transferred a couple the other way then had them shipped to the Republic, entirely simple process that the RFD's are familiar with - cost £50 rather than £30 for mainland transfer between dealers...the guys I dealt with were in Omaha. If you are travelling over anyway I'm sure that could work - otherwise a lot cheaper than the ferry!

As far as I am aware the process is very simple and straightforward but possible only true RFD. Personally done it many times but the other way around. Whilst I can buy rifle from you in England and you can put it on my FAC(as long during my application I pointed you as place of purchase) I don't think we can do the same here. Not *,%100 sure though

I am sure you meant Omagh? Omaha would certainly cost more than £30-50!

RFD makes things easier for sure.

The imaginary border is good and bad for shooters.

I once heard a story about a young lad from Cavan who had a stalk organised in Donegal one morning but woke up late so decided to cut across the border for 10 miles or so at 5am. He was kitted out in camo and had the rifle leaning across the front seat. I’m sure you can see where this is going!

He was pulled by a police car, wound down the window to speak to the police man, who instantly clocked the rifle and drew his side arm to the young man’s head.

He lost the rifle for a few months, went to court and the judge (or magistrate not too sure), noted he was in the UK studying gamekeeping, harmless and gave him back the rifle via a member of the Gardaí at a border road.

Learnt his lesson in paper work, of course he didn’t have an NI visitors permit!

Yep - I think it is Blacklion (?) where the border weaves in and out of the village. Then of course there is Pettigo which is split in half because the little river running through it was used to delineate the border. I used to cross there quite often in the early seventies - on the NI side of the humpbacked bridge there was a heavybp permanent army checkpoint and reinforced sanger with a manned machine gun permanently poking out the slit - every car was stopped and the usual questions asked before one was allowed to proceed. On the other side of the bridge was the Irish security which comprised an old wooden chair sitting in the middle of the road which occasionally had a Customs Officer on it!
I may be wrong but I think this may have inspired Spike Milligan when he wrote Puckoon - if not the similarities are very striking….

I think the Erne is the border at Blacklion.

I travel across to Enniskillen shopping fairly often ( can’t get pork pies, or cheap wine in the south, I need both to survive). I always take the wife’s car as there’s always a chance of ammunition being in one of my cars which would be unlicensed once across the border.

My stalking areas are now getting closer to the border too, will eventually have to get a visitor permit.
