‘Type’ of rifle for under lever

Hi all,

Just putting in a variation, and looking to get a .22LR Marlin 39A or similar rimfire underlever/lever action (apologies if not the right term).

All my other rifles are bolt action, so have ‘bolt action’ on the ‘type’ on my ticket, but having never had anything other than bolt action, I’m not sure what other terms there are? Does a straight pull eg Blaser R8 need to say ‘straight pull’, etc.?

What would you recommend putting for a lever action/underlever thing? It’s definitely not a bolt action, so that feels wrong, but it’s also not semi automatic as you have to manually chamber a round…..

On the variation request you just ask for type = rifle.

It is 'firearm type' you need to ask for, not 'action type'. The action type isn't a legal requirement although the FLDs like to have that info and put it on the FAC, but it is decided at time of purchase.

This is an interesting take. I did wonder about that, but all my others are down as ‘bolt action’ (filled in by my old FEO) so I thought I must just be wrong!

All rifles save revolving rifles and Martini* (or other falling block types) have a "bolt".

The Lee Enfield has a bolt, the L1A1 SLR has a bolt, the Winchester 66 and all its subsequent iterations have a "bolt" but what they don't all have is a "bolt handle" fixed to their "bolt".

But yes, pump action or lever action or self loading is probably more descriptive that just "bolt" although also "single shot" could be used.

* Technically their "block" is operated by a "lever" which anecdotally is why in 1988 when the Tory Government banned centrefire self-loading and pump action rifles that they left out of the ban ever action rifles.

On requesting a variation you'd usually request 1 x .22LR rifle and when you do the notification of transfer it then asks for type of firearm ("rifle") and the action ("lever action") if doing the notification by the HOLMES online reporting engine.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency among FLDs or even with the same FLD when it comes to wording - I have .22, .22LR and .22RF listed on the same certificate even though I used .22LR for all when notifying them of purchase...

Just put you want a .22 RF rifle
Leaves it open to all .22 RF rounds and all action types

Im selling my Marlin 39m in .22lr if/when you get it on your ticket. Mines on as Lever action

The action type is an optional piece of info to inform them about. If you do the online form it mentions this doesn't need to be supplied.

It was found as the lever release ban came into effect that they didn't know exactly how many lever release rifles were out there, so they invented a new, non-statutory, reporting category to aid in future 'recalls'.
