Hares

Whistle?

Never heard of this.

What sort of noise do you need to make? When is it best to do?

I have an area of recently fenced and planted forestry with a hare problem, and any tricks will be extremely useful!
Purse your lips as you would to whistle a tune but just blow a constant note for several seconds, then stop for a few seconds and blow again.
We had hares come to within 3 or 4 metres.
Pretty sure I read about it in Shooting Times over 50 years ago.

Fascinating - thank you.

Is there a particular time of year? Or does it work any time?

Sorry, can’t help with that question.
It wasn’t something we practised regularly as we never had great hare numbers.
Buddy and me did it when pigeon shooting if we were lucky enough to see any hares.
We never shot hares locally.
That was done on organised hare drives in North Wales.

The late Kenzie Thorpe was filmed for television calling hares. (He could call a number of bird species as well). It's probably out there on Youtube somewhere.

A blade of grass between your thumbs, the trouble is repeatability, you need to hit that long meaning note, and let it float!!

Thanks for that WG. i should have remembered where it was. I knew him and others of his family slightly, and he was a remarkably charismatic man.

Yeah I've experienced similar, if you keep still they just don't pick you up.
I commonly have Hares here in the Garden , they certainly pick me up because i have had them come straight to me and sniff my boots etc . They are not so trusting with my dogs mind ( though i don't allow them to chase game off their own volition anyhow ) .

Just speed read this. Where on earth do they get all this data from.?
Hares on my perms are v abundant. More so now foxs and badgers under control.
Will they prevent farmers from cutting silage.?
In some parts of UK Brown hares are a serious agricultural pest.
How are they going to ban the travelling community from coursing them.?
Complete and absolute rubbish based on bigoted views and incompetent data.

What do you expect from the Guardian.

When I used to do hare coursing (legally) we also did hare catching so redistributing them from over populated areas to under populated areas. Often we would catch 70-100 in a day using long nets and they would then be boxed up and moved.
Helped to reduce the urge for the estates to do big hare shoots.
I used to be involved with this in Hants, and on neighbouring estates ,shooting them on drive days.
There were many many hares.
On the estate in Devon l moved to there were a small number when l came in '02,l used to lookout for leverets when strimming the pig fences .

But over time, after the pigs moved off, they quickly dissapeared due to foxes, buzzards etc and a local with a dog.

Amazing what people will gob off about doing in a pub when they dont know you.

Hares have eyes on the side of their head, they nearly have 360 degree vision, but straight ahead or behind not too good. Someone once described them as a selenophile, someone who stares at the moon. They seem to spend an awful long time looking at it.
Funny,l do that.
I love moonlit nights.
