Tikka T3 20inch 1:10 .243 copper?

I suspect this may have been covered - if so happy to be directed to link.

In short - making the jump to copper, plenty options for my .30-06 but baffled by discussions on .243 barrel length and twist.

Does anyone with a Tikka T3 20 inch 1:10 in .243 use copper that works satisfactorily? It will be primarily roe in Scotland, and foxes on the odd occasion.

In the past this rifle has been a back up to the .30-06 for reds on the hill which I recognise may no longer be an option - will prioritise effectiveness for farmland roe.

Thanks in advance.

Any 80gr factory offering
100gr minimum in Scotland is no more

Even if it was Peregrine 100gr VRG3 works and was designed for 1:10” twist
Thanks Ed, that sounds reassuringly straightforward - I suppose it’ll just be a case of trial error to see what the Tikka gets on with.

Not directly, but I’ve got a Sako with a 22.5” barrel with a 1:10 twist, it’s fine with 80gr CX.

There’s an awful lot of rubbish talked about the 243 in ‘standard’ twist and copper. Some of this came off the back of the old 100gr rule for Scotland, so was about what would happen if one law was brought in and another left as it was. That’s not the case now as the minimum weight is down to 80gr. The rest is either rubbish or people deliberately stirring.

My Remington shoots the Fox 80 gr factory ammo with good precision. To little experience on game. But the one that I shot with it, was very clean. Hardly any dammage to the meat.

I’ve just finished the load development of my .243 Tikka T3 transitioning to copper.

3200 fps, 10fps ES. 80gn fox with N140. All zeroed and ready to shoot.

I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to achieve this but Ed (Edinburgh Rifles) was spot on with his recommendation.

N140 and 80gr copper is a good combination and I can get to min energies with a 18” 1:10 barrel. I use 80.5gr Yew Tree and 80gr Barnes. I’ve no doubt the Fox would be excellent too.

I recently added a 1-8 Tikka with a 1-8 , i run 80 grain tTSX copper - No BS this is the option you should get not 1-10 thats likely better with the very light lead bullets . Realy impressed in the fast twist 1-8 but i am not going to run light lead jacketed bullets ! Now i suspect if you run 1-8 with the lightest lead options you mighr encounter bullet break up in flight - Really it happens !
The law has changed ! We can shoot 80 grain on all uk legal quarry ( personally i would not fancy shooting large wild boar with an 80 gram anything ) deer no problem . I have shot a lot of big Reds and the biggest Sika no problem with 100 grain ttsx at long range through my .260 rem and its just brilliant !

I dont think the OP is looking to switch rifle, but asking about copper ammo for his existing 1-10 twist rifle.

I have a .243 R8 standard 24’’ barrel 1x10 twist and tried four 85gr copper rounds (Winchester, Hornady, Wapiti and Barnes). Shot groups of 3 with time for barrel to cool at 150yds. First group was 1.5’’ so I thought ‘ok not too bad’, hoping others might be better. Each group got progressively worse until I was not even on the paper! Then shot group of 3 with lead as a test it wasn’t me getting tired and I was back to 3/4’’…so I am now really confused..is anyone out there shooting consistently with copper in a .243 Blaser? I would love to hear..

@Bowland - I have a 1-8 twist Tikka and it fires 58grn V-max without any issue, no spinning rounds apart - in copper I use 95grn Barnes LRX which it loves as well.
