Out last night for a Roe Doe or a Muntjac, on a ground I've not been to for about a month due to the weather.
Ended up watching a lovely looking Roe Buck in full velvet and hope he stays around long enough to see what he's like once the velvet comes off.
But upon the walk back off the hillside, I spotted a fox in the new thermal. He wasn't far from the landowners chicken pen behind the farmhouse.
I placed the rifle on the sticks and fired up the Thermnight 635r. Used the thermal to locate him and then switched to night vision. Confirmed 100% a fox, and the range finder told me only 135 yards away, down the hill, sat down face on to me. Eased off the safety and gently squeezed the trigger. The 7mm-08 roared around the hill and a solid "Twack" immediately followed. I walked down and he was a fair sized dog fox, the largest I've shot on this patch.
As I loaded the kit into the truck and exited the farm, a quick scan with the hand held thermal picked up yet another, nice looking 6 point Roe Buck. Not the one I saw earlier, this was 100% a differnt animal. Not quite as good as the one I watched earlier, but was another 6 pointer. Looking forward to spending time up there during the buck season.
