Which Rifle

I know this is the thing, I doubt this will be my first and last rifle which is why the Sauer was tempting but again im not wanting to buy something thats totally unusable and going to cause me to get a 1 for 1. I wouldn't have thought a reputable dealer would be trying to sell shot out rifles but then im new to the game and we all know what business's are like big or small.
That Sauer is based in Cambridge and ill be travelling there somewhat soon in the next month for a work course so was tempting to see it then but then again ive zero interest in waiting too see a shot out rifle and waste my time
‘again im not wanting to buy something thats totally unusable and going to cause me to get a 1 for 1’

This just won’t happen mate if you go somewhere reputable who know what they are talking about. Don’t worry about it.

Go to Edinburgh rifles and see Ed and the team, you’ll come away happy with a better rifle than new for far less cash than your budget. Last time I talked to him they are also doing ‘custom’ build tikkas for 1800 odd quid which is also an option.

Just a note of caution if you intend to do any target shooting on military ranges - don't buy anything 6.5 related
Well 6.5 is what I have on license and I really doubt for time being ill be on MOD ground, though of course if the opportunity comes guess ill have to put in for an extra calibre.

Ill take a gander round to the shop some point in next couple weeks I guess, im just looking not in too big a rush but defo want a rifle in the next month. Heard Edinburgh Rifles to be a great shop so will take a trip, and take a trip to Cluny see what the crack is

Already bought a S&B 8X56, so if its yours for sale your out of luck with me sorry lol
A fine optic, I'm biased I have 2. If your looking for a new budget (in price only) rifle. Look at a howa 1500 barreled action and put it in a stock of your choice. Wether a synthetic, hs precision, Mtd field, bell and Carson or wooden grs or form stocks. All excellent ridgid and some adjustable.
Howa have a 3 position safety to.

The S&B is a very good quality scope from what ive read though obviously yet to use it myself but the glass certainly looks fantastic. Only reason I'll ever change it though is for variable zoom but then im yet to find out how much I care for it. Heard good things about the Howas, same action as Weatherby rifles too I believe. Doubt this will be my first and last rifle so maybe going for cheaper alternatives won't be a bad thing

There cheap because of a quantity of scale rather than cutting corners.
A keeper fried of mine cleans his howa rifle once a year wether it needs it or not. I was with him when it fell off the back of his truck onto the road, it was then ran over by a following car. The scope had detached from the rifle and the rifle had tyre marks over it and it had gravel rash on it. But it still shoots straight but needed new scope mounts. I wouldn't recommend doing that tho.

So at long last the gun gods have gifted me my firearms license and shotgun. whoop whoop, happy and excited is an understatement. Walked into a gunshop today for a look at rifles only to be greeted by a what we refer to in Scotland as a Bam. Guy was rather needlessly unpleasant so won't be buying my gun there. Anyways my budget is around 1500 for a rifle alone, been looking at X bolts and Tikka's, used tikka's on my stalks before the actions nice but the stocks are a bit meh I think. Like the Mauser M12impact but I see you get an M18 for less again so not sure.

Real question I have is I have seen a Sauer 100 XTA in 6.5CM on Guntrader for £700 with a moderator which is very tempting but it says it has some pitting in the barrel ? Im not entirely sure what that means and im guessing it means damage and if so is that rifle best to be avoided, i.e is it shot out ? IDK.
Dk whether to just buy something new, but at £700 to get my foot in the door on what is otherwise a decent rifle its tempting.

Cheers
I have a stainless X-Bolt with thumbhole laminate stock which I bought from a member on here, and absolutely love it - it shoots superbly, feeds flawlessly and the stock is excellent. In fact I've just bought another second-hand from my local gun-shop, not stainless but otherwise identical.

the X bolt just just looks good for the money but I’m yet to hold one, see what the crack is when I can get to see one in my hands. Going to take a trip to another shop tomorrow hopefully they’ll have them

I would agree - avoid anything with pitting. It’s not that a pitted rifle won’t shoot, I’ve got one that does and have had others. However, you’re ‘ ‘stacking the deck’ against yourself.

If the price is really good then perhaps but have in mind that a decent new barrel is c£1k and you’ll be waiting a few months.

Edit - I have a feeling the Sauer 100 barrel is essentially a push fit which makes a new barrel more expensive as the ‘smith will likely need to thread the action to make it work.
Sauer 100s are threaded.

I have a couple of Tikkas and an X bolt. I like them both. My wife claimed the x bolt as hers for the time being. It’s a bit smoother than the Tikka and the bolt/safety system is a bit over engineered. You push a button on the bolt handle to open the bolt while on safe while the bolt is locked. It’s good from a safety standpoint but is it needed?

Operate the bolts and dry fire. After firing the Tikka bolt cocks easier but that could just be because my Tikkas have oversized CTR handles and makes them seem easier.

Take a look online at Browning’s new lineup. I have my eye on an X bolt 2 . The stocks are user adjustable on certain models and I’m waiting to see one in stock locally to see how they feel.

100% avoid pitting. Means its had a hard life and not to long left. Not worth the money other than £50/£100 to take it off their hands. But then its a load of hassle doing a 1 for 1 to replace the slot again, so just steer clear. That budget you can get something in much better condition :-)

I opted for a Bergara, there decent really good quality rifles, got a good rep etc and a hauksen mod

Will no doubt change it later down the line to something else but this gets me going with something of quality

Also if you get senior on a bad day in Cluny you’ll also walk away not having spent any money ….

Best bet is honestly the PSE tikka mentioned above or go and see Ed bewsher at Edinburgh rifles , he will sort you out a complete package on the spot.
