Fallow in Tassy

The only species of deer in Tasmania and once again the dumb reporter has failed...red deer in the pic.

The first pic that comes up when I click on your link is very definitely fallow.

(Edit: I see red further down the article).

Was about to say the same. Didn’t see that many fallow when I was in Tasmania 18 months ago - thought they were not that much of a problem unlike here in Sussex, Lincs, etc 🤔

The 'old days' of huge numbers have gone but back in the 80`s well known Tasmanian properties like Connorville had suggested wild fallow herds of 30,000, Beaufront 25,000 to 30,000,Windfalls similar and many many more Sheep Stations. A mob of 600 Fallow could be seen in those days with plenty of lesser mobs in the 2-300`s. I remember seeing a mob of 300 going over a fence on Hanleth. They have had a hiding from choppers and meat harvesters I believe and numbers are nothing as they were and never will be of course. Now you get a buck tag, way back you could get a five buck tag,my old hunting mate Kelvin shot his five bucks on season opening morning on a deer jump.
