IR glare - Hik Alpex 4k. Help!

Hi folks, fitted an alpex 4k to the rifle but when I pop on the ir (mounted above the scope), it’s throwing up a massive glare from the moderator. Do I 1: take the mod off and go old school - bang, 2: use a higher mount/sideways mount for the torch or 3: start playing about with black tape? Will try to get some pictures to show what I mean. Essentially a massive blur at the bottom of my crosshair.

Hi Jock,

What IR are you using with it?

Lots of IRs have spill from the main beam which then ends up reflecting off the moderator or barrell. This is then picked up by the sensor which adjusts it's exposure to compensate and the resulting rubbish image is what you have experienced.

To mitigate it, you can mount the IR further back on the rifle to try to create a shadow with the objective of the scope. Other people have had some success with taping over the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the objective. Worth a try as these a free possible solutions.

The neatest fix though would be to change your IR to the Dark Engine BLADE. This has a completely even beam with no spill and has excellent performance. You'll see well to 500 yards and well enough to 1,000 to check your backdrop.

Cheers

Strip of black insulation tape horizontally across the bottom of the objective, if you put your finger across you will see what I mean.

As Blueroll says, A strip or two of black insulation tape across the bottom of the objective. No need for it to contact the lens and the cover will shut over it no bother.

Curious- as I have a similar setup on the CZ 455 varmint, Zak moderator and using a V20 VCSEL mounted in a Blackwood adjustable high mount without that sort of problem.

I seem to recall that in the early days of night vision using add ons and scopes the cure for reflection problems was to fit the sunshade to the scope.

Years ago I had a similar problem and solved it by putting pipe lagging on the barrel. This reduced the step at the back of the moderator and seemed to reduce the light reflected back
