I have been warned by Admin to wind my neck in ...so will not post anything else that is viewed in any way as "controversial"....looks like thats me off the forum shortly..no real loss though

To answer the OP, not many, like 25 in 4 years.

Not in it for numbers as I'm obviously not a professional, it's just another element of getting out and about, also adding on the many other forms of shooting over the years.

It's mixed in with many other hobbies that can take priority.

As with many of my other hobbies, I've found many get sucked into nuances and rabbit holes over minor details that don't really matter at all, and seem to make things more complicated than needs be. If you're into that level of detail, its fine, but many don't care as they're doing just fine as it is.

Met plenty of good and generous folks from this forum. Hope to meet a few more for parts of the UK I've not visited before.

I spoke to a few gentlemen in Canada who defined themselves as _hunters_. It was their lifestyle and their self image. They had each shot for over 20 years, one over 50, and had a fantastic knowledge of game and firearms. I asked how many deer they would shoot each year. One or two depending if they were lucky with tags in their group. The older gentleman had once shot a 52” moose, if I recall correctly, and could describe articulately the details of the _hunt_.

The controlling factors are access to deer and keenness. If you lack one or the other, you will be limited. If you have both sky's the limit, I guess.

My nephew started his journey two years ago.
Joined a rifle club, and his dad helped him with access to stalking. He got his FAC about 20 months ago, picked a 2nd-hand T3 .308 up the afternoon his certificate dropped on the mate, and shot a Roe with it that evening.
He works 60+ hours a week running his own business. He shot nearly 160 so far, got his larder and butchery all set up as well... he's keen..
He's already done his DCS1 & 2.
I call it youthful enthusiasm.

Good lad and long may it continue 👍

A lot of folks like to talk about stalking and then when you say come on then let’s go they suddenly have to do something or the gun isn’t zeroed etc etc

I work full time but I’m also in the circles of professional contractors who enslave/utilise me for night shooting and such things.

Being able to shoot , use a knife well, above all be safe goes a long way.

You’d be surprised how many people can’t tie those 3 basic things together.

Didn’t the op ask how many deer you have shot , in your life time / up to now?

Not how or why etc …………..or asked for your life story lol,lol

Seems a straightforward question , that is easy to answer .

So I’ll answer

I’ve shot about 15 to 20 deer a year over 12 years , that will put me in the 100 plus category

I shot 17 roe last year and two reds
In total I've shot 25 roe, and 5 reds in four or so years.

I'm not afraid too hand the rifle over for a cleaner shot so I've left some perfectly sensible shots for friend too take.

I can think of probably 25-35 deer encounters last year that a relatively experienced stalker could of shot but due too my inexperience and or haste too shoot a deer, I've ruined the chance the vehicle Is my worst enemy sometimes I need too be more enthusiastic too drive past deer sometimes and come back down walking (why do they always show up on the driver side though? I swear they know.....)

I just went over the 800 mark, but like the majority of here, i have a full time job , so not able to get out as much as i would like, but i do manage 2-3 times a week.
Probably more than half of my annual leave is dedicated for stalking, I allways take time off in the rut and when the doe season starts.
I gave up the furthest and unproductive grounds , as i have more than enough to keep me busy without hammering a particular permission. Having ground 15 minutes away from home helps, as i can go out after work , as the days are longer.

I get out once every two to three weeks. Some places I see deer most times I go. Other times I drive 100 miles and see bugger all. Last year on one bit of ground of nearly 1,000 acres I did 10 100 mile round trip, and saw and shot 1 buck.

Today I could have shot 2 bucks. Went out to check zero on a couple of rifles and one was standing by the house. I could easily have shot him, but couldn’t be bothered with all the butchering. Besides he was in full moulting so will catch up with him in a few weeks time. Earlier in the week could easily have shot two very pregnant does. But they are not in season. I have been stalking since the mid 1990’s and shot a few tens of deer every year.

Been Stalking for 25 years some years very productive some less so, I reckon am about 1000 but have no records to confirm.
I have imo taken recreational stalking as far as it can go before it becomes a job, to go further would need serious investment on all sorts, handling equipment, ATVs and the most precious thing lots of time.
Recreational Stalkers are being pressured into culling lots of deer at a great expense to themselves getting more expensive by the day just now!

Around 32 deer ,Reds,Roe,Fallow, Muntjac and Cwd .
Shot far more rabbits and foxes ,years of shift work meant going out about once a month.
99% of deer where I shoot are Muntjac, everything else on paid stalks .
ILl health slowed me down the last 2 years, amputations and sepsis aren't stalking friendly.
But onward and upward, glass half full and all that .
Look forward to getting back out soon atb
