Indeed ! But like I said neither is a “foxing calibre “ but one might be slightly better than the other .They still run a short distance before folding, twice the energy or not.

Haven’t tried my 22wmr yet on fox , however as I commented on another post about 17hmr it really has restored my faith in it as recently I’ve shot alot of fox with 17hornet and they still run a bit before dying (sometimes ) but i took my trusty 17hmr tikka T1x out the other night and I bowled over a hare at 245yrd stone dead and impressed I was .Despite what most think and say and after owning both wmr and hmr I've found the hmr a far better fox killer.
They are foxing calibres. All foxes can run once shot with anything.Indeed ! But like I said neither is a “foxing calibre “ but one might be slightly better than the other .
Wind does effect wmr just as much if not more. It’s a great calibre however wind plays a big factor at distance but also shot placement as the bullet won’t fragment much if at all passed 175yrd as it losses velocity
I was ringing a steel plate at 350 just last week with a hornet, its a highly underestimated calibre.Have you got many rabbits to cull?
Ever considered a Hornet?
I read on here of one chap who head shoots rabbits at 200-300 yards with a .22 Hornet and has done so for a good number of years. They are ok for sensible range foxing as well.
I have one and love it. Diminutive little case. I wish it were legal to shoot Muntjac with it, I'd use it more than I do currently.I was ringing a steel plate at 350 just last week with a hornet, its a highly underestimated calibre.
Its not keen on the wind mind.
Out of curiosity, what sort of holdover did you have to use at 350? Glass or digital/ballistic calculator on top?I was ringing a steel plate at 350 just last week with a hornet, its a highly underestimated calibre.

Ive a glass scope and use it with strelock and a range finder. My scopes are all moa, I find it easier and to get the hornet to 350, its 9¾ moa or 39 clicks.Out of curiosity, what sort of holdover did you have to use at 350? Glass or digital/ballistic calculator on top?
Try to get 22Lr passed as a foxing calibre then! They are foxing calibres. All foxes can run once shot with anything.
Shoot enough of them and you'll see it. But it's not usually far.
I just don't want you to conclude that because it has twice the energy of LR it's going to behave like a death ray.

A wmr bullet rarely fragments. Most wmr bullets are designed not to.
I've shot WMR pretty much since having an FAC, longest shot was a hare at 165 yards, it is capable of what you are asking but a 0.22 hornet would be much more suited on the same basis that you are saying the WMR is better than LR. If you load then you can load it for around the same cost as WMR factory as it is so frugle with powder and t feels like shooting a rimfire with 35 gr v-max and the lack of recoil.Try to get 22Lr passed as a foxing calibre then!, where I am in country 22wmr is classed as foxing calibre at closer ranges , it’s fact on any given shot with exactly the same bullet ,distance and shot placement a higher velocity round of 22wmr against 22Lr is going to create more terminal damage and give you an edge hence my choice for it .
Wind allowance isn’t in question here as it affects every shot and I’ll allow for it as we all do.
Please bear in mind because I am newish to the forum does’t mean I’m new to shooting ! I’ve shot hundreds of foxes and (other quarry )over the last 30 years with plenty of runners now and again with all sorts of calibres , 17 hornet , 204. ,223, 17hmr ,22Lr even .25 FAC Air as I love them all and each have a specific application .
I’m hoping the 30gr VMax will fragment to a small degree as that is what the ballistic tip was designed to do as it’s not a Hollow point (even though technically it is )…I’ve got my .204 Ruger if I want a “Death Ray”.
All the best to you !
i suppose 165 yard is stretching it but doable for the WMR but yes why do it indeed as its got me wondering , i like the little niche calibres and i do have a .17 Hornet and .204 Ruger however my “downfall” as it were is at present I don’t reload so as of today’s prices .17 hornet factory loads work out £1.32 a pop and .204 around £1.75 a pop … ouch i hear you say ! Does get pricey when you look at it like that. I looked at 22 hornet before i settled on 17 hornet as with factory loads available they both retain the same energy at 100yrd {within 100yrd the 22 hornet is more pokey} but after 100yrd the 17 hornet carries more energy further and flatter ,however i know with reloading it can be a different story energy wise with the 22 hornet as it certainly can be “spiced up” a bit but as I don’t reload YET it wasn’t a viable option. I guess the reason i bought the 22wmr was as a walk around close range foxing gun and rabbiting gun out to 125yrd and was wondering if anyone has consistently used it at further ranges ie 175yrd with consistent sucess, but I’m led to believe some have,it is doable, however not the best choice maybe and seeing as the groups open right up after 125yrd then goes transonic around 185yrd ish”and groups can get wild! then it may be a big ask of it, i was only hoping to save a few pennies when out shooting a few closer foxes and critters on a small holding. …however i do like the idea of a .22 Hornet ! ..whoops did i actually say that !!!I've shot WMR pretty much since having an FAC, longest shot was a hare at 165 yards, it is capable of what you are asking but a 0.22 hornet would be much more suited on the same basis that you are saying the WMR is better than LR.
