Tikka T1x .17HMR Questions

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a Tikka T1x .17HMR second hand. I took the stock off to have a look and lighten the trigger pull - which i did easily and successfully - but I have now confused myself with a couple of other aspects.

1. There's an insert, almost like a cradle that holds the very end of the barrel nearest the bolt. This was loose and the screw that holds it has rusted out. I tried to reattach it but I threaded the hole. So i've removed this cradle. I presume this wont impact accuracy but if it does, do I have any options to reattach this cradle without the screw? would superglue work?

2. Reattaching the stock to the action, i believe I have it proper. However, the stock now very slightly slants down (or the barrel looks as if it's ever so slightly tilted up). However, there is now more space around the barrel than there was before (i think it wasnt previously mounted properly?. Does this look right to you all?

(Rifle is unloaded - magazine removed, checked clear, bolt removed)

What torque spec should I use for each screw (lug and tang) putting the synthetic stock back on? I saw another thread that said 5nm, which seems ............ Frankly Mental.

So the position of the barrel/action in the stock looks fine to you? As in, i've got the recoil lug in the proper place etc? :)

Some people remove them as it’s a contact on the barrel.

Without it your barrel is now fully free floated.

Test how it shoots without it and if it groups / shoots well then crack on.

I believe the screw tightness / torque (after a quick google) should be between 20-35 in-lbs.

Again, some people shoot groups at various tightnesses and see which one has the best accuracy.

I THINK I tightened mine up around 30 in-lb and just crack on at the rabbits without any issues.

Lots of people don’t even use a torque screwdriver and hand tightened, just don’t over do it.

unsure of the function of the cradle part you mention with the stripped thread, but is there the opportunity to retap the hole to larger diameter thread?

Thankyou. :)

Just wanting clarification now if i have put the stock on correctly, as it looks different to when i got the rifle (theres now much more space between the barrell and the inside of the end section of the stock)

Have you seared it correctly with the recoil lug in the slot on the action?

Sometimes it can be slightly off and the rifle sits high, take it out, pull the recoil lug up (I had to use pliers as it’s snug in the stock) and ensure it’s in the slot not slightly off.

Is this right? tried to get it out with pliers but it will not budge and im worried about damaging it. ive already scuffed it trying to get it out

It's more 'this' im trying to check if its right - how the barrell is sitting 'in' the stock (and the foreend) - is this correct?

Leave that alone ! That should be in there.

Yes it should, you just have to make sure you line it up right.

I’ve had it before where it sits on the edge of the slot instead of onto the slot so it’s a bit high:

I pulled it up with pliers to align it, then when I pushed the barrel in it just pushes it back down.

Sorry but it doesn't look right to me, like the recoil lug has not seated itself properly in the action recess. Look at the photos here;

The action lines are running parallel to the stock and the vent hole is sitting lower in the above photos. I would remove the stock bolts and try again, orientate the action to where you think it ought to be then move it back and forth slightly until you feel the lug and recess fall into place, it should drop in by about 3mm or so.

PS Just double checked the op's photos, without doubt the action is not seated correctly.

Hey. Hmm ok. I have taken it out the stock and put it back in maybe 5 times. And every time it orientates itself like it does in my photographs.
