Trained hunter status reverts to DSC1

Kb that's what I was thinking but couldn't remember the dates, details or paper colours.

Did you have to pay for the new different coloured certificate also?
Hi Dickie,
I no longer have my certificates and can’t remember the colours but I do remember I didn’t pay extra to get the new certificate.
Sorry can’t be more help.
Kb.

I think the current DSC1 would form a good basis for development into a more comprehensive, all-encompassing, training & qualification option, if it ever were to come to that.
That won’t happen as apparently we have a deer problem in this country!

I’ve been about fairly in my time and as far as I’ve seen with my own eyes, Dorset has a deer problem, so dose Lincolnshire, everywhere else in the country has a fair spread.

So have just watched a video and sent back the form.

One thing I'd say, both videos only cover a hanging gralloch... Great if that's what you can do. What's the point if you can't...

Wasn't the original Level 1 without it and then it first came out people got a different coloured certificate or am I thinking of something else?
From my recollection of events I believe that you are quite correct Dickie.

There was no "trained hunter" status when I did my DSC1. Some years later we were given the option of upgrading to the new certificate if we paid a fee of I think £15 and completed a single page multi choice test paper. That option was at a later date dropped.

So it looks like "trained hunter" status with DSC1 has been a bit of an on/off affair a couple of times over the years.

Thanks for your recollections its been a busy week and I was starting to think I'm more bonkers than I thought.

The replacement certificate that was a different colour to the original wasn't it?
Though I can't remember where mine is.
Cheers.

You got me thinking so I've just dug my certificate out.

I never bothered to upgrade so my DSC1 certificate is still the original fawn colour that was issued in 2002. (Certificate number 6012).
There's no mention of gralloching, carcase handling or meat hygiene on the certificate.

My DSC1 was issued in March 1998 this was 1 of the very first if not the first new style DSC1 courses and yes we all did gralloching meat hygiene and all the required checks though it was not written on the beige coloured certificate very early days and in its infancy, then in 2006 it was an easy FREE upgrade to the blue certificate which had the meat handling added.

As from next month, so I've just heard.
Splitting it made no sense to me, and apparently it hasn't worked very well in practice, so DMQ are reverting to the old system whereby you get your trained hunter status as part of your DSC1 qualification, which then enables you to sign off carcasses and put them into a game dealer.
Good news, imo.
DMQ2 seems to be dead and Government want a level of competence and it seems like it will be at Lev 1 No real need to do 2 any more as its not needed for anything unless you want to move to Pro status.

Personally I've never seen the point of doing DSC2.
Except for the fact that it exists, and therefore some landowners may ask for it in the belief that it will result in them getting a "better" stalker.

Best thing would simply be to ensure that every DSC1 course includes a practical cacass handling element. Many already do, with a freshly shot deer provided for the purpose.
