what is your favorite calibre ?

.22 is the calibre .223 Remington is a cartridge :banghead:

I also wonder why owning two rifles chambered for the same cartridge is it appears such an indication of favouritism.

:D.

Obviously when I have as many posts as you, I hope I will be so worldly wise.

I have a .270 which I shoot with an Ultrajet moderator and my own home loads. Shoots sweet, quiet and with little recoil at factory velocities. All of this coupled with the .270's flat shooting characteristics, what could be better?

I have .22lr,hmr,.22h,.223r, but i think the hornet gets the vote.Light walkabout rifle, versatile enough to take on all comers vermin wise without higher cost.Easy and cheap to reload, and powerfull enough to use on fox at a good range.
If i fell on hard times the .22lr would be the last to go though, simply because its a good example of the finnfire, and it took a long time to find such a decent example

I love my .223, perfect for Roe/Foxes. Picking up a .270 this time home as upgrading from 6.5. Looking forward to seeing its results.

Not legal for everything but

22-250

I,d use it for everything if I could, the 270 will always be my bit on the side with an odd fling with a 243.

Ummm got to be 6.5x57 just that bit faster than the 55 but just as sweet, more popular in Europe but will get here sooner or later. Also just got to be the .30-06 (or may be the .308) depending if you prefer a longer action and want to shoot heavier than 165grn.

7mm-284

Andy

7mm-284?? is that not the same as a straight 284? or as i suspect the cartridge has come full circle and back to its original configuration by necking up 6.5-284 brass, a bit like the legendary 7mm-06 of the 1960s untill someone pointed out that such a cartridge already existed in the form of the .280 Rem, talk about re-inventing the wheel.

Ian.

.17 hm2/mach2
cheap to run, accurate, quieter than hmr and no ammo issues so far,not as destructive as hmr,and wont bounce like zebedee on steroids unlike the 22lr.
imho the best sub 100 yard bunny calibre there is:cool:
above 100 yards then becomes fireball territory:D

Depends where or what you are doing, Down at the range...... .22lr and my little Vore,
Africa or big stuff........ .375 H&H Mag and my big BRNO
General everything else.. .308 Win and my Tikka.
I think its got to be a combination of a Rifle that you are happy with and a calibre you are happy with and you know it will do whatever you ask of it!!!

I've had a lot of fun the last two nights with the .17 HMR killing 300+ bunnies on silage aftermath. Normally take the .22 but that's not zero'd and I just wanted to get out and shoot something!

If I had to keep just one rifle I'd keep the 6.5X55 and I can shoot pretty much anything with it, but do love the HMR and would be very sad to see it go.

(have .22LR, .17HRM, 22-250, 6.5X55, .308)

They are all like spanners in a tool kit,
different sizes for different jobs!
It makes sense to have a comprehensive tool kit!

Most popular for me is my Sako S/S .22-250.
Purely because it is super accurate with any ammo!

.22lr - semi auto fun, accurate, near silent, cheap ammo, light ammo - I'm sure if it was legal and no other cartridge was available you could, with good stalking (sub 70m) and marksmanship (50p groups all day every day) humanley cull deer with one (we do with foxes). DSC 1 would have to be a whole lot harder though. Head shots and muntjac only.

Having read that, I've changed my mind... .308 I've got some very soft rounds (110g sub 2000 fps) which are accurate enough for bunny; and then load up for anything in the uk. Readily available ammo - you can home load (unlike the .22lr) and sometimes you just need too feel the ooph:D.

But I really like my new .243.....that'll do everything with pretty much one load.

Bugger it.... Far too hard a question for me. Someone with more experience enlighten me please.

My new (well quite old actually) John Dickson 16-bore! Tried it out Sunday, picking it up in the morning and with a bit of practice will be ready for the grouse on the glorious 13th!

Sorry, am I in the right thread? :coat:

For me its the .243 love the calibre i think its a great all rounder, iv had plenty of other calibres over the last 20 odd years from .222 to .308 but its deffo my favourite.
Since i took up stalking seriously a couple of years ago its shot every uk deer for me with the exception of sika and find its mustard on foxes too almost as good as the .22.250.

Im playing around with a .300 rem ultra mag at the moment and im really impressed with that, its ticked all the boxes so far and its the most accurate rifle iv owned.
Up to now its flattened everything its been pointed at but its real test i suppose will come in red rut. DF
