Boiling out a head - what else goes in the water

Chaps,

About to embark on this for the first time...What else do you put in the water for the slow boil / simmer to get the skull free of all the bits and pieces left after stripping ?

It is not a good Fallow head and I didn't expect my Mrs to allow me to do this, but she wants it sprayed matt black and put on a wall !

I am going to go with this as I do not want to dampen her enthusiasm because if I ever shoot a decent head I might then be allowed to do a proper job instead.

Hi Philip

I just add a washing powder as a degreaser and add boiling water as this saves time waiting for the pan to heat up. Just make sure you keep the pan topped up and don't let it boil dry . Fill it up to just below the coronets and away you go . There was a good link on here in the video section showing how to do a Roebuck if your not sure it's worth a look.

I will add some washing powder....de greasing will help with the spraying after.

Thanks for that.

I am not sure. I will look in B&Q for a primer and then maybe a matt black aerosol by Hammerite or the like.

I have no idea what this will turnout like. But as I said I am not going to dampen my Mrs sudden enthusiasm for something deer / stalking related !!!

However you do it just don't boil it out on the cooker in the kitchen as I did with my first. Mrs was not very happy to put it mildly

Apart from the fact that it's a pretty ugly process, surely it's no different technically to making a stew? It probably smells the same too.

you kidding me! LOL. maybe it's me, but the pots I've used in the past get real manky and even if you try to clean them, next time you boil water it just gives off the 'boiled head smell'... it's that brown foamy greasy shjite that just burns itself into the sides of the pot.

just IMHO of course.

Best done outside on the BBQ if you have one with a gas ring. smell will not make you popular indoors. Washing powder and change the wateer a couple of times.

Use the kettle to boil the water first saves BBQ gas.

Enjoy

I do bigger heads outside on a gas ring in the garage, but munty and Cwd do in the kitchen, top tip on the smell front, try seasoning with mixed herbs and a bit of salt, makes a huge difference to your love life and no difference to the finished product.
