have many of you built your own gun?

PKL,
are there any custom bits out there for a Parker Hale? Or do you mean refurbishing the wooden stock?
I think a Parker Hale would a good project to put back into it's original form but not to customise.

The most suitable for a custom build would be a Remmy or T3 as parts are available and costs can be overseen.

The Mauser i am just making is soaking up hours like mad. Everything must be hand made, hand fitted, nothing available.
If one were in the US one would have much more gear available, not here.

I have a mate in devon who has the very same parker hale action your on about. Timney trigger in it. A after market stock.

Its 308 calibre. And I have seen some of the groups he has had with it on the target cards. And if you didn't see rifle.
You would think it was some very dear custom rifle that had shot them there that tiny.

300 pound is all he would want for it. 20 inch match bull barrel with brake on it.. The trigger and stock isn't fair off that price new I bet.

ejg, I was thinking of using a PH mauser action, sticking a new barrel on and either building your own stock or having one made, even going down the richards microfit route, either re-working the existing trigger or having a new timney installed.

I have one that I'm just trying to decide what to do with, but I think I'm going to build a .375Ruger. I'll be restoring the bolt and parts, installing a custom barrel, adding some decent front sights and rear express sights + barrel band, then adding a zebra wood stock with ebony tip and buffalo horn grip cap + pachmayr decelerator pad. new timney trigger and an overall rust blue of the metal. oh, and talley rear sling stud + talley colour case hardened rings..

I see no difficulties in this project tbh and the end results will be very rewarding I suspect.

what more can you want ;-)

While that photo does show the rifle to indeed be a Savage rifle (versus a Rem 700), there are starting surface quite a few Remington's with after market barrels that utilize the Savage barrel nut system. IIRC, Bergara sells the kits that install a Savage type barrel (but with Remington threads) and a barrel nut to set the headspacing. I'd imagine the stock would have to be relieved for the nut, so that the action rested back in the stock (but don't know for sure). Still, necessity is the mother of invention, right? The "free market" system is telling Remington, that shooter's can deal with the aesthetically unappealing barrel nut, if it allows them to change calibers or re-barrel simply...

Who'da thunk, eh?

Love it or hate it, the Savage barrel system works. Period.

I got a lothar walther barrel put onto a sako 75 action and will be getting a laminate stock for it shortly, I am already delighted with the result and overall its not costing much more than a brand new sako 85 SS Laminate would have been. Still on the original synthetic stock just now but shoots great! This was at 288 yds with factory ammo....

Interesting project.
What I mean is...just e-mail that wish list to a few custom rifle builders and see what the costs or wait would be.
If you can do most of it your self it will be fun building.
My Mauser build started with hack sawing off the bolt, shaping a new one and getting it TIG welded again.
Then finding a replacement for the flag safety. Apart from all the other problems like scope mounts.
In the end it'll be really good, but hours are just vanishing.

Not sure if this is the answer, but ive built several rifles for myself, based on Rem 700, Tikka, Sako etc actions and then moved on to BAT, Surgeon, Barnard and now im building two on Borden Rimrocks for F Class.

The rifles are used for stalking, foxing, tactical comps and F Class competitions.

Have a few pieces of silverware that ive collected along the way.

Very satisfying to make your own equipment, use it in the field and have success with it.
