Potential new stalking show

Species:
There are 6 species of deer in the UK
huge proportion of stalkers have probably only shot 1 or 2 and probably never seen some of the smaller ones
I would like to see a range of stalking, not just highland red or arable fed roe.
Mix it up with boar

Nature:
I want to see shots of owls 6ft from a high seat, hares that walk into line of sight at 10ft as you are being so stealthy, the noises and smells of what we see outside at 5am on a summer's morning, roe fawns in a hay field, footage of wildlife that no-one else sees and coming home empty handed but happy because you just spent 6 hrs IN nature.

Conservation:
The bigger picture.
Everything that we do outside stalking in partnership with landowners and farmers, be it snaring, shooting vermin, feeders etc etc
The real country code
the darker picture (long dogs and poachers with .22's)

Sport:
There is more to what we do than on the day.
build a story around the full cradle to grave experience
going out with your dad as a kid, gradually getting more experience and responsibility until you see the deer before he does, your first rifle, your first deer, prep it, cook it, eat it, the pride
the time and effort and planning that goes into it, getting the clothes, boots, reloading, testing, zeroing, prepping the night before, the sleepless nights in anticipation, the early rises before the alarm had a chance to go off, the dog sitting on your coat/boots/rifle so as not to be left behind

The results:
The pause after the shot, watching the followers move off under their own steam, taking note of young, old, injured, pregnant, bucks, hinds, does and stags
the approach, The checks
The gralloch (and examination)
the carrying/dragging, loading, butchering, cutting, slicing, mincing, bagging, sausage, burger, bresaola making,
the barbecues, the sunday lunches, the dinners with non stalkers, and their genuine surprise at what they are actually eating and how nice it is!

Education:
anatomy and physiology - in detail.
butchery and cookery
ballistics and bullet choice
calibre and cartridges
optics and light
weather and waterproofing
toys and accesories

What should be avoided:

Painting deer as crop destroying, tree bashing, RTA causing vermin to be shot on sight - I want to see stalkers shown as the people who care about the deer the MOST not the LEAST
Tacticool gun crazies
balaclava wearing cammo clad snipers
long range shooting other than to test ability should something go wrong. I want to see how close people get not how far their latest custom 6.5x47 £5k rifle can hurl lead....we know that.

close up camera work when what we really want to see is the bigger picture
constant shot changing (think badly edited Tarantino film!)
intrusive soundtracks and poor dubbing - don't dumb it down, "genius it up"!

i think you have absolutely nailed as well as any of us could put it. Brilliantly put. Shaves green I hope you get this of the ground and I genuinely do.

Eggy s mentioned 'searching for west', i love that film but as he said it had a budget and sponsors.
Cinematography and editing is key, as is a top end camera, the post i put up recently to Montana Wild they use a DSLR, but their editing is superb, the cameraman i had out with me last year filming for the Sportsman Channel used one of these
Nolanscamera.jpg

If you havent already also get yourself a HD action camera
It depends what you want to produce, a grainy jerky poorly narrated Youtube clip or something actually worth watching.
Best of luck with this venture, but if i was going down this road i would do it to ultimately make a profit, Montana Wild have the best idea, get your name out there, get people interested, then think about going commercial as they will be doing.
Cheers

As there's nobody paying for it as a product, there's no rush to get it out there is there? I think you should spend a month filming for a single show, attending as many Stalks as you can, and maybe getting enough material good enough to last an hour, the focus should be on quality, and getting a short series right, one that maybe only runs for 12 episodes each year, it might take you many months to edit, so such a project might take 18 months to get to the stage of posting the series on Vimeo first, not YouTube, as you'd have more control, you can always dirty yourself with YouTube at a later date. On Vimeo you would remove all the advertising nonsense, and have more control over your precious material, and could seek the advice of professionals that use the site.

More than the camera, which should record to memory cards to cut down video transfer times from camera to your None Linear Editing Suite on your computer, you need a proper editing suite on a computer that is designed for it, basically a powerful Mac, running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is what you should be aiming for. The camera is going to knock you back the best part of £5k, the Computer getting on for £4k, and the software about £3k, its a big investment, if you're going to do it justice I'm afraid thats the kit you should be aiming for.

Otherwise, you'll waste many, many hours, trust me, using lesser kit, and spend less time doing the things that matter.

Having filmed, edited and produced a Saleable DVD of a single International Deaf Rugby Game, for charity, using just the kit I have for my own hobby at home, it took many, many months, and could have been better (it could always be better), had I the right gear, the right computer, and the right software.

At least, if you give yourself 18 months for filming, and editing, to produce a series of 12 episodes, released on Vimeo, you'll not be scared of running out of material, and if well received may end up exploring other areas of Stalking for a second series, maybe on the BBC? Who knows.

BTW, the title should be simple, and shouldn't worry about any double entendre, so I think it should simply be called 'Stalking' and maybe using a Red Stag design of Logo.

Just my two cents, I can't give much input regarding deer stalking as I'm just starting out myself, but the above experience might be useful to you.

You can see stuff I've done on Vimeo, look for England Deaf Rugby, it's the best I can do with what I have here.

Have a look at roestalker on YouTube he makes good video and music fits if he adds it. He is also SD member.

I'd agree, Roestalker has a different perspective to most, and I love his slow-paced classy films.

More importantly, go with your instinct and make your films your way. Do it for yourself and not others, especially if it isn't a commercial venture. What have you got to lose?

I can't understand the idea that stalking is a completely solo pursuit and should never be captured on film. I am sure that like most on here, I like few things better than a good tommy tank. I wouldn't want it filmed of course, but then again I'm really glad that others film and distribute pornography, a different perspective if you will, to help make my lone pursuits more enjoyable.

Hi Shavesgreen!
I love the idea of a monthly show, maybe more, maybe less...!
A show from stalkers and true sportsmen for true sportsmen, please without a group of selfmade "heroes", showing up too often on the show and promoting (sometimes silly) things...
I am not sure yet, if it should be very educational or just entertaining.
I do personal like all the good filmed reports about someone hunting something somewhere, some other people (my wife also) call it "hunting pornos", for me its good entertainment!
Whatever you decide to produce, please feel welcome any time to join us here in Germany, or maybe join me on a swap hunt somewhere in the UK!

So far good luck with this project, atb

Why not as a start do a short series on SD's own apprentice stratts. It could then clearly show a progression that someone has to take

Just read through this thread and I'd be up for it but have no idea how it could be made into a interesting series of films?! But if you wanted to take it from a complete novice through the stages of stalking over a period of time it's a good start, as you won't get much more novice and grass roots than me!! Trouble is things would have to start moving quick as my DSC1 is booked for 4-7th June!!

Interesting idea though and I too think it would be better as a monthly programme for starters, which may take 6 months or more to gather enough material for editing.

PM me any time you like mate,

Stratts

Thank you all who have given feedback and made offers of help, we really appreciate your support and will be sure to keep you posted on the progress.

Good luck with this mate, sounds a great plan and I hope it works out! Give me a shout if you need a hand with anything :thumb:

+1 always room for more and not just a swarovsky glam show! real stalking please warts and all but if posible tell us how far away the film crew are away this may prevent the last rants so
please watch you filming when back stops are nr roads house trees bushes twiggs etc , as we would't wish another slagging off of someone out stalking
 :thumb:

If it would be possible to produce a regular show without being in the pockets of Zeiss, Swarovski or Blaser...than great!
Most stalking, at least in my circle, is much more 'on the coal-face'.

Well guys it`s taken 12 months to get anything going but here is the first instalment of 6 that will be released over the coming months.

Really enjoyed that. Something that I can share with friends to help them get a better understanding of all this.

Cheers
iain
