How do you get any peace and quiet to revise?

I'm going to lock myself in a room with my Peltors on.

Still really struggling with dates, (seasons and breeding cycles) my brain just can't collate the information.

Edit:
Wife's just asked me to to strip the duvet cover off the bed :banghead:

Sorry mate, just p****d myself. Good luck.
Difficult one as always. I went away for mine. But I am also crap at studying. Hate it with a passion. Unfortunately I have a lot of studying coming up over the next few months work related.

Looks like you have a bit to get through !
Did mine a couple of weeks ago - it's not as bad as you imagine
Good Luck

Desks and chairs are a good way to start!!
Read a chapter and write bullet points on the things you don't know. Read one chapter at a time, then go away and digest. Go over your bullet points and then re-read it then test yourself on the question bank before you go onto next chapter.
Write down the seasons and put them in your car, on the mirror, at work (the dates won't mean anything on there own, to anyone but you)
Trying to read and digest huge chunks of information in one go is very difficult

Si, get one of the online tests signed up. That's how I did mine, you learn the answers- that's how you pass exams. I learnt far more stalking after my Dsc1 than I did for that! Best thing about the tests is you can do on your phone wherever you are. I used to do on the way to/from work and at lunch, 2 weeks and I blitzed the tests.

Seasons are a b#@@#@, but learning the answers is the easiest way. Just remember Scottish roe bucks are for april fools.

Read the chapters on legislation (ignore NI) and ecology of each species, twice. Go to the questions and treat them as an open book exam, highlight the correct answer, it will be sinking in, go through the now highlighted questions every night until your actual exam, look at as many correctly labelled pictures of deer. I also avoided all other forms of literature while I was studying. I will also add on mine a few weeks ago there were two questions on the exam that were not from the question bank in my manual (July 2012), but if you have familiarised yourself with the manual the answers are there.

The Jelen on line system really worked for me. I'm sure the on line service can be bought separate to their courses.

I'd did the tests giving the questions I didn't know my best shot, knowing that they give the correct answers at the end of the test.

I then just went over the questions I'd got wrong, repeating the correct answers to myself. Each time I did another test, I got more right, until finally, I got most of them right.

I found this FAR easier than having to read through the whole manual, and learning it that way.

So I'm guessing by some of the answers on here that nobody actually wants to read and learn about deer then.
They may as well just give you the bloody questions and the answer section. DSC1 what a load of cr-p.
Nobody seems to want to learn about deer only get the means to shoot them. Idiots

With regard to dates: Bear in mind that there will never be more than four questions on dates by law of averages (frequently fewer), and therefore it is impossible to fail the written paper just by not knowing your dates and that's without a guess. So don't worry about dates. I doubt very much you'd go out to shoot deer without some pre-conception as to what species you'd hunt and therefore not know whether it was in season or not as you decided to pull the trigger. Focus on the more important stuff.

There is a well known training supplier on here that has a good Mnemonic for the dates if you are worried.

I'm sure you'll learn lots about deer from what you're doing - and the Trained Hunter status should also help with your confidence. Keep going and you'll be fine

That's what I thought, I carry a card in my car with all the seasons on... Perhaps I should get it tattoo'd on my arm :D

It's not just the seasons I struggle with....

In what month does the roe rut usually begin?
a July
b August
c Sept
d Oct

During which month would you observe roe to determine the previous years recruitment?
a Oct
b March
c June
d August

There are a lot of questions with months/dates as the answer, I can remember everything else.... just not bloody dates!!!

Right Si, i wont be sitting next to you in the test !!
I sat a personality test and copied off the guy next to me, because i dont have one :-))
I am sure if you stick at it things will start to stick.
The answere have some logic to them for instance the roe rut is a summer thing so it cant be sept or Oct, August would be a bit late allowing for gestation (although it can be delayed) so july would be right
At worst you would have a guess between July and August 50% chance on guessing right
All the best Buddy

A sweeping statement indeed. I am reading the BDS Manual and a rather large volume of SNH's Best Practice Guide for my DSC1 course being held in July at Barony College, not as the sole means to shoot deer but because I want to learn more about doing things the right way.

DSC 1 might seem like a load of rubbish to some old sweats but to newcomers like me it is a place to start on the way to becoming a safe knowledgeable stalker.

Well done for wanting to learn more.
What really gets me going is that some people quite clearly advocate just learning the answers to the questions so as you know the answer and not perhaps what it may relate to.
The only reason I can see for this is that they are not in the least bit interested in deer and only wish to use the qualification as a means to an end....to shoot deer
There is so much more to deer.

I totally agree, but I'm sure you will also agree that simply doing the DSC1 teaches you very little about deer, if someone really wants to learn about deer I would suggest to start by reading actual deer books and more importantly go out after them, not necessarily out to shoot them, but out to observe them ideally with someone who will give an insight to behaviour, condition and environment. To me the DSC1 is like a driving test, it shows you can be trusted with the basics, the real learning starts afterwards.
