Lightweight stalking smock/jacket for summer use needed

I like the design of the Scott Country Pintail with it's fixed hood and bino chest pouch albeit I've not put one on yet so how warm or otherwise would be my only hesitancy.

K

The only issue I have with the ridge line stuff is it breaths about as much as a bin liner. Maybe they have fixed this issue with the pintail but I have the monsoon smock and its a toss up between not wearing it and getting wet from rain or wearing it and getting wet with sweat.

Ive had mine 10 years of very hard wear and a set of trousers no issues, the Montane stuff is very good but there are lots of other make of para silks that are just as good but cheaper. Try John Bull or SASS for 2 options.

Had my Parachute one for years, even got a hood on mine!

Try the Laksen Backwood as a light showerproof - you can pick it up for about £15-20 - £40 as a suit. Perfect for the emergency.....although the 'summer shower' I am currently experiencing may need a little more Goretex...!!

Always a problem , breathabilty , no one has cracked it yet , other than getting a Gortex string vest you sweat and get wet , assuming you dont shoot off the back of a pick up.

True, some are better than others though. The Paramo stuff is very good. I have a Musto soft shell jacket for "going out" which Is really good, I got it when my sister worked for them at a serious discount, wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise.

The Loden smock I have is very breathable but will only turn a light shower.

Ridgeline and rivers west are like bin bags though. However in really heavy rain the Monsoon does keep it out.

I have been looking for one of these too

my problems:
1) Velcro has no place on any jacket of mine! if I can't open whilst within 20 yards of a hind/doe then why bother!?
2) most of them rustle like a tesco bag, I looked at an arktis thing yesterday
3) I don't want a fully waterproof version of a fully waterproof coat I already own

I just want a green/brown, non-fleece based, non-rustly, high necked, "overshirt" with a couple of pockets!!

is that too much to ask!?

I have had a light smock made by West Winds from a single layer of Ventile, for 20 years, absolutely bomb proof.
It has stooc up to everything I can throw at it, including working around the lakes with strimmer's and chainsaws.
It has also proved to be far more thorn proof than a Barbour wax jacket, not one single rip, and no burns from fire watching duties either.
I am in the market for another as for some reason it has "shrunk" a little (a lot) over time ;)
Considering this one Kestrel Smock - Wind Waterproof Ventile Jacket - Country Innovation

Neil. :)

well I have just ordered some ripstop cotton in a nice dark green
will show you what I am after once I have built it!!

This has been my thinking too with the added - 'I don't want to have to sell a body part to afford it' either!!

I thought about getting some material and seeing if my mum could copy an old sas smock I have down the allotment, which is now riddled with holes where the mice have been munching!!

Where'd you order the material from? Or does anyone know where I could get some ventile at a decent price?

Cheers

Not Ventile but alternatively if you want a cheap cottom smock to tinker with you could try a green one of these

£12.99 for a cottom smock and you can mod it til you're hearts content

Fisheagle Smocks Glasgow Angling Centre

I have an ancient one of these and kidna forgot about it, no noise, breathes but waterproofing may be an issue, haven't proofed mine but always yet another option...:D

Ive got one of the Lowlanders and it seems to be pretty good if you want light, waterproof and breathable.

However somehow it also seem to keep you decently warm in the winter somehow.

Dave the bloke that sorted me out seems a good lad as well. Id reccomend it

I know you have an aversion to cammo, but all of the above are perfectly met by army surplus combat shirts. I really don't like cammo as well, and every time I have to get a new field shirt/smock I swear I'll find something civilian - but have never found anything that even remotely matches the functionality of the army shirts/smocks. So all my stalking gear remains cammo. I'd swap in heartbeat if I found something civilan that was as useable for the same price - but I've had to admit it doesn't exist.

well I just got 6m2 of material posted for £22
if I am correct I should get two "items" out of that....

I am thinking somewhere between shirt and jacket...ooo just had a horrible image of Christopher Biggins in a Safari suit and Pith helmet!
