Stalking knives I'm making

Nice work Nick, looking really good. Do the leaf spring blades hold their edge well? hope all good with you.

I'm very well mate, how's the weather in Havana?

After heat treating I waited for that blade to cool down and put a none to shabby edge on it. Then I hung from the garage ceiling a piece of rope, about half inch thick. It was hanging freely and with a good swing that blade went straight through it.

It's been in my inglenook waiting for a handle since it was forged, but it's earned its keep splitting kindling all winter. It most likely wouldn't go through the rope now, but I wouldn't want to rub my thumb along the edge!

From a 40 year old spring?

As soon as they get hot the oxidised steel burns out and exposes the pitting. To have ground it all out would've left the steel too thin for anything. It's only 3mm thick to start with on those springs, got to leave some 'body' in it or it would have cracked and/or split when I heat treated it.

Remember this is Amateur knife making, I'm not Owen Bush or Mick Maxen. This blade is my 4th attempt at forging a knife. Besides, adds a bit of a RUSTic charm I think. ;)

I was only pulling your alice clip! Nice work and your last sentence is spot on.

Cheers

K

well done they look super, i have seen a couple of knife makers here but not to that standard

Glad you like it mate.

I wouldn't say my efforts are anywhere near the standard the on site makers are at.

They're churning out many good knives, I'm finishing one in around 7 months at the moment, purely because I just don't get the time to sit down to work on them.

The resident makers are also in it for the money, so they haven't got time to procrastinate over one blade like I do, clients wouldn't pay for all the file work I do if it went on an hourly rate! :D
