Ok, got 2 s&b 6x42's and a meopta 7x50 to choose from......decision time

S&B, they will work in the woodland fine, if it is too close to darkness would you be risking the shot anyway?

S&B 8x56 point and shoot, if I'm honest, my variable IOR scope on my other rifle never!! gets adjusted, it's on one setting and that's it, only use the illuminated retical when gloomy. That's both woodland and open hill stalking.

For the money you have available, maybe a few quid more, look for a second hand S&B 6x42, good optics, all the magnification you need and will last several lifetimes. I have shot beasts in the forest with them and out on open ground, have fallen flat on my rifle landing on the scope, no shift in zero. Zero it in an inch or so at 100 yards and you can just point and shoot out to the 200 mark, no fiddling with magnification could not be more simple, I have had one for years and love it.

+1 Wise words. I have a variable scope on my Heym. Its never been off 6 power in 30+ years. I have an all singing all danceing S&B flash dot on my Mauser. allways on 6 power. Buy a quality second hand fixed power scope.
Cheap scopes are sh!te.

Would you say then i would be better off with 50mm+ objective over the 42mm? Had been told previously that a decent fixed (sb/docter/meopta) of 42mm would be ideal for what i will be doing most of the time (woodland rides high seats)

Me, i would go for the S&B 6x42. 98% of my stalking when i lived in England was woodland stalking. As i said before my scopes are never off 6 power and i have shot a truck load of deer with them. We are rather conned into thinking we need all these high mag, 50+ mm scopes. when in reality a quality 6x42 wiil be good for all your woodland stalking. On my Combi i have a variable scope set on 6 power and that is just 32mm with a thick post and rail reticule . I've had no problem shooting deer at dusk with that . it is quality glass though.
I've fitted an Aimpoint 1x on my Mauser and i will be useing that for all my hunting this year apart from sitting out at night for boar.

with the all the respect in the world , why not go and buy a second hand S&B 8x56 hungarian 1"tube will do every thing you are going to need .

with mine ive shot deer effectivly out to 350yds and as close as 10 yds . cheap as chips you can pick one up for £350 in fact a mate of mine picked one up in the SD classifieds for £300 posted and has never looked back .

​when my 30-06 eventually comes home ill be looking for another one !

You won't regret it, totally different class to the cheap and nasty scopes you were initially thinking of purchasing.
