long range scope choice

Hey Richard, I see we're local to each other. If you're keen on the K264i and not able to get up to Swillington or find anyone more local with that has one in, drop me a PM and you can have a look through mine.

I went up to Swillington Shooting Supplies in Leeds. I have no affiliation with the shop, however I have had nothing but brilliant and friendly service from them. Give them a call and speak to Chris if you want to go take a look at the line-up. I'm sure they'll do what they can to accommodate you.

No need if I can trust your judgement .............
Its the K brand all the way!

I don't have to prove to myself what a great stalker I am, shot enough close range and think in many cases it is better to take a deer from a little distance.
edi

a man after my own heart, never a more true statement made on SD. Why risk ruining the stalk by getting too close, get into a good position, with the right equipment, in the right conditions, and take some well placed shots on un-alerted quarry. Better selection, better meat and (arguably) better sport, certainly can be more productive.

my "stalking" rifle wears a zeiss victory 4-16x50, 1cm elevation turret. My long range rifle wears a pm2 5-25x56 ffp, 1cm windage and elevation turrets. Happy to shoot all quarry, with both at close or long range.

I use a Nightforce NXS 8-32x56 on my TRG22 and shoot regularly at Bisley out to 1000yds, great optics and just as good as PM11. I think you just pays your money and takes your choice.

Sightron SIII LRMOA 6-24x50 bought for a 6.5x47mm rebarrel project. £900 from AIM Fieldsports. Probably a better scope than I am a shot!!

My Sako 85 7mm RM has a Khales K 418TT on it and it works great. I was considering the Nightforce or a Schmidt but I liked how light the Khales was and the turrets have covers, which I like on my hunting rifles. But all in all the big names are pretty good IMHO, just pick what you like and what you're comfortable with.

Got a sightron SIIB31242HHR 3-12×42 surplus to requirement, very little use , anyone interested pm me

hi AJ -just got back from shooting and picked up your message.thanks very much and I would very much like to have a look.where are you in NW.?

Have used a Z6i GenII BT IR in 3-18 x 50 with 4A-I reticle for a couple of years now and really like it for stalking. Not everybodies cup of tea with the fine reticle but this is my preference. Have just swapped this scope off of 7mm-08 on to .243 for more general vermin and small deer use with a Nightforce NXS 8-32 x 56 with the NP-2DD having been installed today on to the 7mm-08 for longer range work so whilst it is too early to give you any practical range or field reports on the NXS, that was my choice after some deliberation and am very pleased with the quality. That said the Swaro might just have the edge in terms of optical quality in low light conditions but it is marginal.

Have dealt with this company several times and the service has been excellent along with the prices,Kahles/Nightforce/March etc etc

Hi

Hi check out sightron. Good scopes for the money. Used by a lot of long distance boys.

Countryman of Derby is the best price I have seen and they are not too far from you if in South Yorkshire. Aim fieldsports also very helpful and will help.

PM me if you want any further info of the range, reticle options etc.

cheers

March scopes as previously stated.
If it's target shooting you intend you won't go far wrong, have a look what team gb use

Ok so far I've been called an arrogant know it all and a pillock. Anyone else care to give me abuse for the fact that I viewed an opinion on an open forum on a DeerSTALKING website
The same site that has many new members every week, some of which are new to stalking or are thinking of getting into stalking and for there to be so many posts about long range range shooting comes lacross as saying that shooting at deer at long range is the norm and therefore perfectly acceptable.

when I joined this sit in 2006 it was a good site for all things deer and deerstalking related, there were many good and knowledgeable guys on here who had a passion for deer and did not just see them as targets, which it seems more and more people are doing these days. There were hardly any threads mentioning long range shooting let alone people posting on threads that they'd rather shoot deer at long range than get close, and again posts about which long range this or that is best.

there are many other websites that are about long range shooting and they should be the ones that are visited by people with any affiliation to that kind of shooting.

Feel free to continue calling me names or giving me abuse, you can even pm me and do it! But at the end of the day I am voicing my opinion..... An opinion from someone who is passionate about deer as a species and their management, not someone who sees them as a target for their expensive toys.

im happy for admin to ban me if they so choose, i stick by my feelings and don't give a flying **** who calls me names.

I can't say I advocate the name calling, there's no need for that. However, I'm sure I'm not alone in my passion for both stalking and target shooting. Yes this is a deer stalking website, but many of the skills required to consistantly place an accurate shot on a deer at 150 yards can be honed and perfected by target shooting. Why should someone who has stalked deer for years and fancies shooting paper or metal plates to practice their skills be forced to sign up to another website to ask a simple question when there are plenty of very experienced resources right here?

I shoot targets out to 600m, but that's not to say that I'd ever so much as contemplate taking a shot at a deer at even half that range. Being able to shoot at 600m does make me a better shot at sub 200m however. I'm convinced of that.

Im a fan of S&B, I find the eye relief suits my eye. Ive tried Nightforce scopes on various rifles, but struggled to get a decent sight picture, they seem very eye/head placement fussy, which the S&B isn't, the same goes for Leupold, Ive got a couple of these and while they are fine on the range the combination of eye relief and low light performance doesn't make them ideal in the field, again the S&B has great performance. Ive not tried Kahles, Zeiss, etc so cant comment on these scopes.

Your best bet is to try a few either at a shop or get down the range and see what people are using/ask to have a look through their scopes.
Everyones eyes are different, what suits one person may not suit you.

Because he's a pillock???

Not being an advocate of using deer as long range "targets", but believing in stalking deer, in 2010 I was prompted to write this,

"Now if folks want to shoot deer at 1000yds + with .338 Lapua Mags or .50 cal, use anemometers, range finders, have spotters and refer to their bullet drop charts while shooting deer, fine, fair play. But don't call it stalking, please don't, because it isn't."

I stand by the statement.

Simon.
