Just wondering how many on here have never shot a deer?

This i asked someone earlier are all muntie providers only wanting people with 243 or above ?just curious,;)

I have seen that quoted with some but the wording from memory was 'preferred'
I am sure they have their reasons, but I much prefer the .223 if I am out specifically for muntjac

Thats why i never pushed it further with the 223 last year as all the replies said that,I know there are other reasons maybe bigger deer around but if the enquiry is just for cwd/muntie then why not ,doug,

I've never shot a deer. Hell I've never shot a fox either. Got my first FAC last year so starting from the bottom rung and this seemed to be the place to start to learn before doing... And only fashioned concept but one I agree with.

I have fox, muntjac and plenty of flappy things on my patch with roe next door. so far only the geese, pigeons, corvids and bunnies have seen any action, bigger things remain on the list.

I haven't.
Gradually became more and more interested in deer management after joining this forum (initially for advice re: 22lr).
Been stalking a few times courtesy of members of this site, but no deer on the floor yet.
Unfortunately no deer on any of the land I farm, and none iin the surrounding area either. Can't afford to pay for stalking, but prepared to wait my time - sure an opportunity will crop up in the end.
In the meantime I'm accumulating kit (including deer legal rifle on open ticket) and done my DSC1

Sort of forgot my first deer it was a orrible buck really, more memorable are the two i've shot whilst having a poo in the woods that just pooped up before i could wipe my ass. yes i did wash my hands before the gralloch as both times i was by a stream and i always wear gloves anyway :fib:

I've only taken six since entering the stalking world eighteen months or so ago. I've been a keen shot all my life, but had no experience of stalking. I was very fortunate to be taken under the wing of a kind, experienced individual on the forum. They, along with the kind members of the forum, furnished me with sufficient "beyond the book (DSC1)" knowledge, practical experience and skill to be able to successfully stalk, gralloch and butcher. Illness has prevented me getting out quite as much as I would have liked, although I only really desire to keep the freezer sufficiently stocked.

I've not really had "bambi syndrome", although I do confess to being quite impacted by my first. I was physically shaking and quite disorientated upon reaching the animal. Fortunately I was being guided and the guide left me be whilst he got on with the processing. Like many others have expressed, I always feel a tinge of regret on reaching each animal. I also strongly suspect that will always happen and am glad that I don't have to reach cull targets or the like. Rather, only shoot what we (and the landowners) desire for the table.

OK, i am going to have to come clean now, it has been interesting reading everyone's posts and opinions, especially in relation to the bambi syndrome.
But in the back of my mind i had a plan, which i will now reveal, i will take note of the previous posters who have not shot a deer yet and put the names in a hat, tomorrow i will contact the first name drawn by pm and offer a free stalk on does/hinds in December down here in Devon.
All i ask is a voluntary donation to Help For Heroes.
Cheers
Richard

There's some history behind my post Richard. Mr VSS came out with me a while ago after buying some boots off me for his missus! I got him onto some deer (eventually!) but they were not best placed for a novice and he made a very mature decision not to take a shot. I've said he can come back any time and there are Roe Bucks in there right now that are laughing at him in his absence!:D. Your idea is therefore unique and very commendable!:thumb:

Well Richard you ( & monkey spanner)

Have put a wee smile,on my face and made me realise there are still some folk with a heart & kind generosity about ....good on the pair of you .....

Too many times I've seen generosity like is only for the recipient to try to take the stalking for themselves..... Sign of the times I guess but refreshing to see offer like this

Hats off to you gents

A'the best

Paul

My first was the one in my profile picture, had the scope on a good few more of them but let them be....
In fact I was watching some last night whilst out for Muntjac....

We travel to shoot Fallow so always a mission to roll a few over, shooting them from a high seat is ok, however I really enjoy being tucked in on a ride or the edge of a clearing for one to step out....

As for the Muntjac, they suit my shooting style down to a tee....once you get dialled in on them, they are easier
to predict...

To be honest it was a pleasure just to be there, in the woods at crack of dawn, in the company of someone who really knows what he's talking about, deer or no deer.
One day I'll be in the right place at the right time, but meanwhile even a blank outing is a learning experience.

(btw, I like the phrase "not best placed for a novice " - mostly what I saw was their arse ends getting rapidly smaller as they legged it! But M S is right - an experienced shot would have been onto them in an instant, before they turned tail and ran. I know my limitations.)

I am of the belief that your first one either makes or brakes it for you. The most vivid shot I have made to date.

couldn't agree more. do you remember that 182 yard shot Richard? not the best buck but a gold medal from my perspective. since then there have been quite a few "best" moments but that sight pattern of the cross hairs followed by the elation of a clean quick kill will stay with me for ever. As with other things you never forget your first time!

I take my :tiphat: off to you Richard and Monkey Spanker, how very generous of you both. Best of luck to VSS and who ever is lucky enough to go with Richard.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Just to prove it was above board.

Gaothead you will soon get a pm

If Gaothead can't make it i have made a note of others drawn and will offer it in turn.

Cheers
