  1. Barrels below minimum wall thickness

In 1975 my grandfather paid £500 for new barrels to be put on his (long dead) grandfathers 1884 McCririck sxs, boxlock, shotgun. Then he gave me this for my 14th birthday. Since then it has now been shooting regularly for with only one minor lockwork repair two years ago costing £150. The gun is...
  2. Stutzen Rifles

.243 is a superb deer round. Very accurate, flat and easy to buy or reload. Fine for reds in Scotland too and it is far quieter than a .270.
  3. Wallabies

I had a pet orphan baby wallaby for a bit in Oz. They are really cute but a bit dumb. They like sleeping in warm bags. But when left alone they will not just lay still like a normal mammal and wait for mum because they never have to do this in the wild, so this makes them a bit impractical as a...
  4. What decapitates 3-4 week old lambs?

I was told in a lecture that big cats often kill by leaping and punching through the rib cage with both front feet to stop the heart. So if it has broken ribs this may be a sign of a big cat kill.
  5. Landrover Discovery 3....do I need medical attention

Well I got the first incarnation of the Range Rover Sport, secondhand of course, for £7,000 with 60,000 miles on the clock in excellent condition - never gone off road before I bought it. Basically it is a Discovery but better. It still has the solid chassis so you can fall into a stream without...
  6. The 243 may be fine in some localities, but

Alberta boy. My grandfather, served in the Raj in the foothills of the Himalayas before the war. Apparently, for a bit of fun the subalterns would go up into the hills where there was miles of thorn scrub covering the mountainsides. Through this scrub were hundreds of tunnels inhabited by huge...
  7. The 243 may be fine in some localities, but

I agree with ndt man. A .243 is great under 200 yards, because its speed will give excellent terminal hydrostatic shock effect and brilliant knockdown with ballistic tip bullets of around 100g at 3,000fps from the muzzle. However, above 200 yards the speed is reduced and it starts turning into...
  8. Things To Do In Lockdown

    Mad Max barbecue.
  9. Stutzen Rifles

It is nice to have the bottom of the barrel protected from knocks. As for mud etc the wood stocked Lee Enfield did OK in two world wars. But for plastic lovers maybe someone does a plastic stocked stutzen rifle in stainless steel. Better still, why not make a SS rifle with an integral moderator...
  10. Consequences

What a pointless thing to do. Might as well shoot them whilst still in the cage - which I am sure is all they have ever known. What possible improvement shooting-skill-wise to a clay pigeon? The whole point of game shooting is for the birds to have as natural life as possible, for most not to be...
  11. Stutzen Rifles

It is true that the perfect beauty of the stutzen is gone with the moderator attached, but I don't think it looks any worse than any other moderated rifle and very practical. Short, light, low noise. And when you are not using the moderator you have a beautiful rifle. I like this option. Thanks...
  12. Stutzen Rifles

You can stalk any deer you want in the UK with a .243, no problem. I would definitely go for it.
  13. Things To Do In Lockdown

Takbok, it sounds like it is getting serious for you. Consider a bit of gentle counselling?
  14. Things To Do In Lockdown

I ordered a see-through picatinny mount plus some quick change 1" rings for my Ruger 1022 scope. Ordered from the USA. It is coming no problem. So after sighting in (another thing to do) I can in the future easily swap between scope for vermin, or open sights for action shooting on the range.
  15. 243 legal??
