Dirty Business

Any one seen this on channel 4? Well worth a watch.
Most people saw or at least aware of the Alan Bates/Post office dramatisation on TV.
Dirty Business on channel 4 is a similar dramatisation about two retired gents investigating water companies pumping raw sewage into rivers.
Outrageous is too soft a word for what they discovered. Lies, cover-ups and a weak Environment Agency just makes your blood boil.

I have just started watching it. It's shocking what went on and is still going on but as a fisherman of over 40 years it isn't a surprise. The laws around sewage discharges are a joke, the EA is toothless waste of space, DEFRA is just a bigger version covering more areas, MP's on the whole don't care and water companies just want your money to pay bonuses and dividends.

United utilities supply my water and treat some of the waste water. They are known to be one of the biggest polluters in the country and yet I am forced to pay for service they are not delivering. I am on a water meter and get two bills rolled into one. One is for the volume of water we consume plus the standing charge and the other is for volume of waste water we discharge plus the standing charge. Whilst I have no real problems with the water supplied to my house I strongly object to paying for waste water knowing that it will all end up in the river I fish in various states of treatment. Would I be within my legal right to refuse payment for this part of the bill as the water company isn't meeting its obligatory part of the "contract"??

South West Water has a shocking record of pollution, yet my water bill almost doubled at the end of last year. Like so many things in our country, things have got so bad it's hard to see how they can be rectified. All very worrying!
