Having notified my Police firearms licensing dept (Sussex ) on the only contact available (an online contact form) I’ve received this back.

Do we really have to go through this every time we wish to carry out a legal activity ? The email address to be used might help some.

Dear REDACTED

Thank you for contacting Sussex Police regarding your shooting activity.

Are you legally required to inform them as part of CL55 (never used it so don't know)? If you aren't then I certainly wouldn't bother, I did a trial with TVP for lamping foxes, and although the staff were great, to the point we were on first name terms, it was very time consuming at times

You are required to notify them yes but I think this is a bit OTT myself.

@Greenmist Yup - Condition 7: Local police and your FLD (if different)!

1772801751411.webp

@Firefly I have just done the same with Glos and A&S this morning - be interesting to see what I get from them!

The condition only states that you must inform the police but it does not specify the exact details to be supplied. I can see each force coming up with a slightly different set of criteria for information to be submitted.

If your patch/permission covers two or more force areas do you have to inform all of them?

@wytonpjs please post any response you get.

I suspect many people will wish to use the night licence simply to extend their window of opportunity for an extra hour or so either side of first/last light rather than routinely doing full on night sessions. With this in mind, I could see me using the licence on almost every stalk in the doe season. They are going to be getting a lot of emails from me.

Four years to work on this and it’s still full of holes.

Playing devil's advocate, could you in theory enter the date range in which you intend to carry out night shooting?

Eg. if you would be shooting, say, Roe bucks during their open season anyway, could you not then use that date range on the form above?

Notifying for every individual stalk taking place after dark seems overkill..

I think it's important you push back and say no to this. Vehicle reg 🥴

Most legislation as written is full of holes.
Written by very bright people who generally have absolutely no subject matter knowledge/experience.
Besides if legislation was written in such a way as there were no holes hordes of solicitors and barristers would be unemployed.

Yes but how do they sort out you from some poaching bastard ?

That will be my first plan. 0001 on first of November to 2359 on the thirty first of March. Probably get thrown back.

Hopefully get mine back soon been nearly the 10 days. Would be handy to get a few extra hours in before end of the doe season. I will notify my firearms team of my reg and the sites and give the dates from 1st date to end of season. Email 101 the same each outing

My view is you are not legally required to inform the Police of night shooting - you have a FAC that means the Police has authorised you to use Firearms within the rules of the Law and under the conditions on your FAC, and your deer night shooting license is your authority under the Law to carry out that activity.
However if it is a build-up area it may be sensible to do so (?)

In my own area (Glos.) I have had directly conflicting advise from the Police Control Room, my then FEO and the Police Rural & Wildlife Crime Manager, where all three departments told me the other two departments were very wrong. In the end I took the view that I don't need to inform the Police to do something for which that same organisation has already given me permission.

Condition of the licence though isn't it.

Up here when we check in with the police at the start of outing they ask most of those questions in all fairness - it’s just easier over the phone.

At one time I phoned in at the start and the end of a shooting session but it turned in to a far when the call handler wanted to know the ins and outs of everything, And then phoned at 2 o’clock in the morning to see if we were still out even after we had told them we had headed home.
