A big thanks to Timmy (aka Tim243) for helping me with the title for this post ...saves me scratching my head
Headed off to Devon last Wed with the mighty Sheepmoor...or the 6.5 Creedmoor (thats what normal people call it apparently
).
Out Wednesday evening after fallow. Lovely weather which is a welcome change. I tend to watch one field on the edge of the wood and ambush the fallow as they come out anywhere between 120 and 300 yards away. First 2 fallow showed but were spooked by a walker in the wood so ran straight across the field with no chance of a shot. As always the deer start to come out on the last 15 mins of legal light. A doe and one of last years young came out about 150 yards away so took the doe first and the follower second after he stopped about 170 yards away. Quick check behind me followed by a bit of fence hurdle and managed a 3rd at around the 120 yard mark. Collected the deer, sorted deer and dropped at the game dealer....and ...naughty me...no pics
Early morning Thursday morning and of course the group of fallow were the wrong side of the boundary.....
Thursday afternoon saw the Sheepmoor account for a roe but again I forgot to get a pic which was poor form.
Thursday evening...blank session with fallow the wrong side of the fence....
Friday morning headed back to the same place as Thursday having got permission to shoot the fallow next door....stalked in whilst it was still dark to ambush them...no sign....Looked up at the top of the wood and there they were...In the one place its impossible to get a safe shot as every angle the only thing you can see is deer and sky...i did crawl 200 yards up the hill (it was light at this point) just to test the theory
Friday afternoon and managed a young pricket. My mate sent me a message asking if I was going to shoot the deer in front of me at any point...he was 1/2 mile away and could clearly see then but they were in a dip so I had to wait 10 mins to get a clear shot. Dropped to a pinning shoulder shot about 120 yards away.
Saturday morning I decided I would get up at 3.45 to give me more time on the "frustrating" ground to see if I could find the group of fallow. Walked through the wood to see if I could find the deer and finally they were somewhere I could shoot them though I had a mile walk to get to that position so the extra time in the dark was taken up with that. I got into position about 5 mins after legal light and then watched them for about 10 mins before they decided it was time to get up and head for cover. First shot taken on a doe at 180 yards (chest shot), group ran to my left so shot the second doe at about 90 yards in the head, group went right so shot a third in the back of the head about 60 yards away and managed a fourth about 170 yards away.
So all in all the Sheepmoor appears to actually work ...9 shots with copper...9 dead deer ...who would have thought
Since Timmy is my hero I thought I would try and post a couple of pics worthy of him
