BASC DSC & LANTRA

Before I did my level two, I shot 100 Deer, now anybody can do level two just by rolling over 1 so in theory you can do it the next day after your level one with little or no experience as long as you’ve got half an idea and can take the boxes!
around 15 years ago i did dsc 1 ( shouldnt have bothered but there you go ) instructor went round the room asking what peoples experience levels were , funnily enough id shot more deer than him .........

And then the door opens to the ****wit night license, and then you’ve got idiots going about with rifles shooting at night with night vision/thermal equipment who have really got **** all experience in real life dear stalking yeah brilliant idea!
Cant fault what you are saying Lee and I had shot 50-70 deer between DSC1 and 2 (probably took you weeks to do your 100 and years for my 70 odd).

Whats the answer then? Get people to do a night shooting assessment or dont shoot them at night? ...no easy answers as competence is difficult to assess objectively.

Don’t shoot Deer at night, somebody will get killed in the end. It will only be a matter of time!

Keep night shooting to those who can actually do the job properly who have experience in doing the job properly, not giving it to people who can just walk and do a BDS course and all of a sudden they’re qualified and experienced in doing the job!

You’re all running around like kids in a newly open sweet shop with your new ticket. I find it quite pathetic really personally.

For the record it took me best part of 18 months back then to shoot 100 deer before my level 2, I managed dear properly I didn’t shoot them like pests

I read this and just laugh, the longer I sit back and look at how deer stalking has become, I really am glad I’m heading to the door!

I’ve had the best of it by a long shot thad for sure.
Looking back over a very long time, it's the way shooting has been going for years. Death by a thousand cuts.

The changes since I was a lad have been unbelievable, and few for the better.

👍

The issue is you say keep night shooting to those who can do it properly but how is this assessed? Ive been shooting foxes at night for 20 years and shooting deer in the day for 13 years ... but you have no idea whether I am safe or not do you? (I am by the way)

Just highlighting that there needs to be some objective aspect to how we deem people capable or not. I am sure if we set a shooting test up at 200 yards prone and demanded 5 shots in a 2" circle people would cack their pants.

The problem with me is I come from the era where dear stalking was a myth, when Deer stalking was an art form, the days of looking at deer, did it meet your necessary requirement to remove it from the group, none of this whole kill them all death and destruction etc!

And slowly over the years all the good guys have disappeared some passed awayand some have just got fed up with the bull**** and just do their own thing, the SD is a prime example of that, the knowledge that was on this website 10 years ago vastly outweighs what’s on it now and that is fact!

Appreciate your view Lee and as you said you have been there, done that and have the T Shirt. The issue is that there are problems with deer in some areas and this needs to be dealt with. Having herds of 100+ fallow in a farmers crop at night isnt something they will tolerate. The problem is that every area is different both in density, safe havens etc so thinking a blanket approach will work is crap.

We have virtually no deer where I live so any I see are left well alone until the numbers are sustainable..I would hope there arent many on here who would wish "death and destruction".

If you look at all other industries there has to be some sort of tangible demonstration of competence
Is this not what the FEO discovers at interview with the applicant when the FAC is being considered for grant or it when it is applied to be varied? So why are we seeking to make additional so called qualifying pieces of paper THAT THE LAW DOES NOT CALL FOR.

When I sought a lawyer to a matter of my wife and child coming to live in the UK I didn't ask to see his "certificates". I asked him three questions. Explain "Surinder Singh" to me, what is EU Directive 2004/38 and what does the Metock ruling mean?

Certificates mean just that you've taken a test on such and such a date and achieved a "pass". Just same as an MoT it doesn't mean you care is "roadworthy" the next day and like the lawyer it doesn't mean you understand what practical rights the cases give effect to.

I cant answer that ... all I know is that I was asked to do my DSC 1 by the FEO...maybe I should have refused but given the ease of doing it and the fact I learnt something I did it...right or wrong I got my .270 without any hassle 👍

I wager he's working on the landowners, rather than the police.

Have you actually seen 100 fallow on a field?

I’ve seen over 100 red on a field if I have one shot, maybe two if you’re lucky and then they **** off for three months that’s what happens when you get 100 red on the field!

The rest of its bull****

And if you’ve got or have applied for a night license on a wing and a prayer, because that will get you to pull the trigger more, you’ve gone greatly down in my expectations, bearing in mind you live in North Wales and you’re stalking in Devon

With respect Lee, 100 fallow on a field isn't a lot.
And as the herd size increases, their behaviour changes.
