Midday stalking

@Freeforester where did you get your lunar clock
It was a gift, they’re readily available.

If the moon is on the rise as the sun goes down, I don’t bother;

If the moon is to be in the sky at sunrise, stay in bed.

Better chance later in the day once the moon isn’t pulling at their pelt, often they’ll be moving through daytime (here, at any rate) when the moon is full but not over the horizon.

My tuppenceworth, but I’m no more expert than the next, just had a few more decades of observation, and having been at it more or less full time and making my living from them.

The salt is on the table, help yourself :tiphat:

I have reds on a piece of ground that during the season only come out in the middle of the night and then during the summer will lay around in silage and tillage ground like livestock in the middle of the day unbothered by any farming or walking.

Thats pretty much how it works here you'll be able too manage a handful of stags during october (more, if you used digital) you MIGHT get a hind late october, then november? yep those suckers are gone they only started daylighting after the season ended.

At least for Scotland Its not awful If I want one I can shoot one I just need too select the right sex but it sucks for the reducing the population in any meaningful way.

What are people's experiences of going out to walk their rifle around midday to pass the hours between the morning and evening stalk?
I had been out stalking yesterday at around mid day and saw a few roe about nothing shootable due to them being just over the border but they were there.

An additional bit of information for our ground, at least.

Spring - Mornings and Evenings being the most productive with a little bit of mid-day stalking still sensible.
Summer - Morning and Evenings only we've tried, Its a waste of fuel especially considering we dont use thermal.
Autumn - Until the first frost the deer behave like they do in summer, once we get frost roe are consistently out after 8am+ little too none regards during sunrise.
Winter - Again dependant on weather If there's any hard frost our deer wont budge we dont bother with morning or evening anymore, almost always mid-day

For context we've just started doing evening stalks again because the deer have started too behave with the season change, we're seeing deer couched up pretty consistently by 9am and on the move for 5-ish.

You will very rarely see them in daylight while equipped to deal with them 😤
Nice to see though 😆
Shot a good few hinds in daylight. Travelling through forest block to feed birds always carried 30/30 on quad. See em on ride, drive past, leave engine running, sneak back. Great tool with 4x scope up to 100 yd shots.

Well I was out this morning. No fallow, 2 roe doe. Midday hit so I popped back to the truck to grab a bite to eat.

On the way out the woods, I look across the field and see this lot browsing the hedge line.

I stand with the rifle on sticks for an hour before the wind changes and they run off.
