Old age and getting run down

Not that I’m old 😂
I’m 58 now and have had a lifetime of keeping very fit . Road cycling mostly with all sorts of sport thrown in
Football , mountaineering racquet sports , you name it I’ve tried it

In between all that has been the constant hunting, Guns , lurchers , ferrets etc

I retired 3 years ago and have not had a single day idle until December last year when a chest infection flattened me for weeks
On the back of that, a disc issue in my back cost me the last of my season beating and loading

Right now, I feel like I’m struggling to get back to it .
My mountain bike is laughing at me and I’ve got so much to do but it’s really a hard fight
Some told me that after 55 things got hard and got harder to get back to , I’m beginning to appreciate that.

Am I the only one or this an actual thing ?
Should I drink more and not worry about it ? 😂

Your more than welcome
I actually wish I could have a drink with you . Life’s to short for the amount of friends you have to make 👍

Just wait until 55 is a few years behind you (it is for me almost 9 years) I still try to do what I could when was 30. That never ends happy.

Im 59, looks like we have lead very similar lives.
I'm burned out...
Hard work and hard play all my life 7 days a week.
A horse, dog or man only has so much in the tank.
A friend told me one Sunday that everything I do is "fcukin' hard" I'd rung him up to come and give me a hand with a dig, 12' with roots and stone, he decided to "walk" 🤷🤷

If you have flu like symptoms get checked for Lymes
It can destroy your health permanently.
Ask me how I know !
Seriously it's bad news untreated .
Joints aching?
Lack of energy
Brain fog
Heart flutter
Skin irritation.
Disproportionately tired after doing small things .

COVID buggered me.
Not been right since that bastard second jab!
Anyway at 59 my body periodically says a big fat no!
Constant joint pain, disturbed sleep.
I noticed things going wrong at 46.

Started my annual logging for next winter and it fills me with satisfaction doing it but chit, the next bloody day!

When I see an old buck with his head down low...its like looking in the mirror!

I think this is what we all have to come to terms with , after a certain age you've got to accept that you're capable of a little less as time goes by.
I'm 53 , have realised that stiffness and joint pain goes hand in hand with strenuous exercise now. I stupidly jumped a wall last may and did an ankle ligament , that's made me realise that age stops your recovery time massively. You can't fight time sadly. But you can still enjoy yourself.

I would definatley get your disc sorted it will transform your life, go private its worth the money. I had a similar problem about 6 years ago NHS said a wait of up to 2 years its a no brainer.
Oh and keep having a tot of the malt.
Tusker

thought it was just me 😊 67 now, got a knee that gives me grief and then a back also occasionally.
Take longer to get over colds and tasks i used to think nothing about doing now start to take longer and more effort.
No longer want to do the jobs on the car like I used to once, like breaks or servicing it.

But do consider myself fortunate as it could be worst and can still get out rabbit, fox and clay shooting, but for pigeon shooting the hide is not always where i would like it but where i can carry or drive it to.

It’s no wonder there’s a deer problem in the U.K. when the average stalkers age is around 60, and according to here, we are all worn out and half crippled in our early to mid 50s 😂

My father in law still skiis 60-90 days a year, approx. He turned 90 this year! Swims most days and takes a 1-2 mile walk when not swimming. He still works 10 hours a day in the family company and travels to UK from US, China, France, etc. not a spring chicken and virtually doesn’t have an ankle bone left after a World Cup ski accident in his youth.

How? Luck? Some luck for sure in terms of catching diseases etc, but I reckon not stopping work, not slowing down and daily exercise is the answer.

Watch people semi-retire, retire fully, etc, they are like a plant that starts to wilt; more time sitting, more reading, sleeping in late, early to bed, but the brain slows too as it doesn’t get stimulated.

Hell, I’m only late 40’s and everything hurts! Elbow issues, back problems many people would not return to work because of, knees pain, chronic tinnitus, you name it. But issue is that you let it beat you, it will take you down quickly and add 20 years on in just 5.

Not long ago the average age for men was 60!!! Hell, you’re lucky to still be here ! 😂

68 and still trying to do too much. Yet to retire as the money is good and it pays nicely for new toys 🙇‍♂️

I think the secret as others say is to keep doing what you enjoy - ease up to much and IMHO it’s a slippery slope down hill. Recovery does take longer and unfortunately the cask-strength Islay malt comes out most nights now but, as I posted elsewhere, I’m determined to go to my grave with few regrets. Life is not a rehearsal - it’s the real thing and we only get one shot at it so go for it :thumb:

65 this year, didn’t,t realise hills grew higher the older you get, go to the gym 3-4 times a week, try to get out shooting or fishing on my days off, as I work only 5 days a week now, just got in from looking for pigs at.the local pheasant shoot, but cutting a ute full of logs tired me out, o to be young and dull again.

Boys a feel your pains 🤣🤣
61 this year hoping to retire in 4 years
The years of heavy ground works are now taking its toll
Had the chest infection from hell in Feb
Got over it a day paving & ma hands sees up elbows are just about pulled out the sockets
But still like to potter on having a litter of springers this years always keeps me young when pups are about ..

My thought is the roll of the dice, 80 this year surprized I am still here? Hands are a problem? fingers all move as does most other things not as I would like at the time I need them too. Rattle with medication that has been added over the years, still clay shoot fortnightly and can advise newcomers so the peepers still work, find damage to skin as it is fragile with age and the medication when I sling the cartridge bag and gun over my shoulder a slight sting results in a blood bruise in the sting area. 22 rifle club Wednesdays pm, occasional visit to Bisley, booked stalk for later on this year, my coterminous certificates are in for renewal as I write. Looking forward to the Stalking Show this month which I shall drive my self to, God willing, no fear of being stopped for drink driving as I have never been interested in the stuff other than an odd shandy if I have to. As above have two Cockers for beating, one coming up ten and the other just two keeps me mobile daily.
BC.
