McMillan A5 thoughts?

Evening chaps
I sold a McMillan A5 regretted it, bought another, and yesterday ran into a friend who had an older Sako 22LR in one which seemed pretty fantastic.
Is the A5 the perfect design or did they later develop something better?

I personally prefer the 3-5 as I like the squared forend, that and the A4 adjustable. Im not sure I'd get on with the rounded forend on the A5 but I certainly wouldnt turn one down. If I had the choice of anything from PSE, manners or mcmillan it would be a mcmillan every time. I like the long standing heritage in military/LE that the other 2 dont have. Manners would be the second choice

If I could i'd have a folding Manners, best of both worlds, PSE have really upped their game with the Evo, but no sign of a flat top which I think is a mistake, I'll take a look at the A3-5

I wish someone (with more money than sense) would do this back to back with a mcmillan, pse and manners. See which comes out on top.

A6 takes care of that. Its designed to hold square against barricades in prs style matches.
Its like the next version of the A5.
I personally prefer the look of the A5 though.

What was the older sako .22lr as I have a sako finnfire p94s .22lr and would love an aftermarket stock like a mcmillan. I have tried looking before with no success in any kind of aftermarket stocks...

mcmillan stocks were the dogs for decades and are still a superb stock and i think for general purpose they are hard to beat , chassis style stocks have taken over in comps particularly PRS style but a bedded mcmillan is still a solid choice

i has a sako P94s and it's pretty much the finest off the shelf rimfire available or at least the old one was , i'm less enamoured with the new one

i sold mine though and went with a rim-x barrelled action which is on a rem700 footprint so opening up a world of stocks to me , it's currently in an MDT ACC as a rimfire trainer for my fullbore PRS rig and i have a mcmillan i can drop it into if i want ? a slightly more budget friendly option would be the begara 22lr barrelled action option which is also on the 700 footprint

Had an A5 that I sold on here and instantly regretted it, bought an A3-5 recently and really rate it, preferred the wider rounded A5 foreend though, always on the lookout for another A5,

Been looking for a mcmillan for one of my p94s aswell but seem to be hens teeth, do have a laminate thumbhole stock for a p94s sitting but not a fan of it

Had numerous Macmillan stocks including several A5 as well as T4a Manners and their thumbhole

I did a back to back comparison once of the T4a and A5 - there was nothing in it

I’ve had several McMillan apart for bedding - they are fibreglass shell filled with a resin compound that will have air pockets in (easily found when bedding)

Yes they are strong - but it’s only the outer shell that has the strength

Manners are carbon fibre shell and similar and I’d argue that their stocks are marginally stronger being CF based over fibreglass

PSE have internal hand laid carbon fibre I beam construction with carbon shell

Which is stronger - well neither Manners nor McMillan have CF I beam internals - read into that what you will

Recoil impulse is felt totally doffernt when shooting A5 : T4a compared to thePSE E Tac

The E Tac is straight rearwards with very little lift

Perfect cycle in my view

McMillan and Manners are older tech but work

PSE newer materials and tech and work

Choose what you like and stick with it

I own 2 A3-5s. Ergonomically, they fit me better than anything else. Weight is another matter though.

i was speaking to danny from stafford synthetic stocks he does all inlets by hand so said no problem
his wait time is much shorter and quite a bit cheaper too.

I sold a game warden that I soon regretted. Very nice shape. Not many come up these days, would be keen to get another McMillan for my tikka.
