Keeping Ducks For Eggs

Thinking about using a bit of waste ground with a pond for some ducks.
(unfortunately the pond does dry out in summer, perhaps this could be rectified?)

Never kept poultry although a friend down the road does.

Would an area of around 40m x 20m be large enough.
Presume it would need stock fencing to keep the predators out.

A couple of moorhens currently occupy the pond along with a pair of visiting mallard.

The other issue is Avian Influenza. Can the ducks ran free in this pen? Do I need to exclude wild birds with netting?
Spoke to a women today who keeps 27 ducks 25 females 2 males
Locked up at night in a large stable on straw with 4 big large water containers on a muddy compound
23 eggs a day Carkey Cambles are the best with White Alsburys ok but a 1/3 bigger so eat more and some cross breeds

She has in the next pen chicken's mainly road isld reds. :tiphat:

Peacocks might be a more attractive proposition :-|
For God's sake don't let peacocks loose!
Headkeeper friend of mine, many years ago now,was asked by the boss to incubate and rear a few " to beatify the estate".
Fast forward maybe 5 years, they drove the boss nuts 🤣a rifle fired out foxing at night would set off the nearest roosting peacock, then the cry would be taken up successively by every other roosting peacock until the whole estate was in an uproar of Maayo Maayo🤣
It got so bad that on a designated night, carefully chosen for ideal weather conditions, the headkeeper,2 under keeper, myself and my under keeper all took to the woods with 22's and a pocketful of subsonic rounds.
We ended the night with nearly 40 of the damned things, the only employer sanctioned shooting birds off the roost that I've heard of 😳
RIP Vince Westmoreland, the craziest headkeeper I ever knew.

I hear they are quite tasty, never had the chance to find out, but a young lad in the next village shot one out of the oak in the grounds of a care home and said it was lovely tucker...

How would u stop them flying out
Trim flight feathers,15 seconds a wing.

Breeding ducks have a proven higher fertility count if they have a pond deep enough for the duck to be buoyant while the drake sinks it into her btw. Ducks will often lay in their own pond,I have fished many an egg out from the water.
