Driven Boar Calibre

8x57 handlods are my choice moving forward. Circa 200g cup and core bullets at medium+ speed. Or 7mm/300 magnums with 160+ bonded or partition types. I’ve used 7mm mag and 308 in the past. 308 power level is the minimum. I shot a big Keiler with 180gr rem factory core locks and it didn’t even react. He died though. Most of what you see is small, but the mature males are huge and hard to kill. And your shot placement will likely be poor.

308 or 30 06 seem popular for pigs. As such there's probably more of them available to buy and ammo will be easier to source at home and abroad. Any of the 30's will do the job. 👍

Not sure if this is helpful or not but there is an absolute bargain 30-06 in the classifieds on here:

Edit: just reading back and saw you already picked a new rifle. Still, this might catch somebodies eye who is in the same boat as OP

I've killed a number of Moose and Bears with 200 gr cup and core bullets through an 8X57 , an extremely under rated cartridge . The load I used almost exclusively was a 200 gr Speer Hot Core at about 2450 fps , nothing moved far after being hit . A reliable old round .

Took my own advice and bought a 1982 vintage BLR in 308.
You'll have to take my word for it but you can believe every word you hear about this gun, using up a rake of pulled bullets from when I sold my previous 308 including 130 barnes tsx and ttsx, 165 grn speer btsp and 168 grn speer bthp match, 155 grn ggg match ammo plus a handfull or two of 180grn + gas checked cast boolits the worst group I shot was 1.25" - 5 shots btw, the best was one ragged hole. Repeat shots very quick and recoil not too terrible.
I initially had a lazy firing pin due to it being in storage for many a long day but brake cleaner and HP compressed air followed by some silicon oil sorted that out.
bar7.webp Scope is a nikko sterling boar eater ( don't you just love the american titles) 1x4 with an illuminated reticle that I bought new at a discounted rate and it still cost more than the rifle. Borescoped the barrel which looks perfect. Very pleased so far.
I got some 180 grn SP bullets to load up and two sons and self are proposing a hungarian trip next Autumn if I can crack the Euro transit paperwork for several rifles as we want to make it a road trip event.

you can drive to germany through france without any fuss so all you have to do is find out the rules for austria

Are 6.5 chamberings used on continental boar now in some countries? Wondered with the growing popularity in f they had been used more often now. I can see a 140gr 6.5 bullet doing a good job on a boar….although I’d still take the 06 over it.
Deleted a double post.

Last year I bought a FAIR Safari 500 Express rifle in 8x57JRS. The test target indicted that the gun was regulated with the 185 grain GECO load. I couldn't find any GECO ammo here, so I bought some 196 grain PPU ammo.

I fired two rounds at 25 yards and both shots were right next to each other. Then I fired two shots at 50 yards and the shots were about 2 inches apart.

My plan is to mount an Aimpoint. According to my ballistic program if I zero the gun 0.5" low at 25 yards, I should be right on at 50 yards.

The PPU load delivered about 2320 fps and this means I should get 2200 fps at 50 yards. A 196 grain bullet at 2200 fps will deliver around 2100 foot pounds of kinetic energy.

The gun is lightweight and handles like a dream. It points like a shotgun and I love it. I also have a Husqvarna 1640 in 9.3x62 and this gun would also be a most excellent boar gun

But for short range hunting none of my rifles feel as good as the FAIR.
