So some of you may remember that I posted about an all original MK1 Shogun a while back.

My uncle had sadly passed away in an accident and his wife was left with an old MK1 Shogun on her drive. It sat for 5 years odd, before I decided to actually buy it myself.

It then sat on my driveway for nearly a year whilst kids and family took up all the time.

Well finally it's happened. I got it running, sorted out a few obvious issues (replaced old squealing belts) and replaced anything that was old and easy enough to do (spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor, oil, etc ...).

Well she fired up and I took her for a quick blast up the road and back. Absolute death wobble at 40mph - and it didn't want to go much faster anyway. More parts ordered (seized caliper so ordered all new calipers, and new leaf spring bushes) and off for the all important MOT.

Well there were lots of admirers at the garage, and the MOT tester said he couldn't believe how good condition it is. He said he really struggled to find anything.

Now I'm at the stage of thinking about it as my proper stalking vehicle so I'm after ideas about the boot. It's the LWB but not got the 3rd row of boot seats.

I'm thinking gun safe for rifle, drawer or two for kit, 10l water container with hose (12v pump on aux battery), and the carcass tray sits on top.

This'll be a home build job.

Very interested in thoughts on trying to keep ticks and keds out of the main area. Probably just carcass tray covers though?

Had 2 of those in Auto (diesels) which was perfect for towing a heavy welding trailer around London
LWB Petrol Patrol also SWB 3.3ltr Patrol
Carry the deer on a outside platform at least they might drop off on the way home.

either carcass tray covers or get a roof rack and put the carcass up there.
 
Hadn't occurred to my to put the external. I suppose in a tray it'd be fine but sod getting them up on the roof.

I want to keep as much originality as possible but a tray that slots into the tow bar mount would be good.

Mine had lots of grease points on the upper & lower arms so they got a dose like all my 4x4 props every 3 months as they are forgotten
 
With the third row of seats in, they all fold flat to make a double bed. !!!

I picked mine up new, drove it 86 miles for a con rod to exit through the crankcase.

Later in it's life I put some BFG AT on it. Driving up the A34 in a biblical thunderstorm it aquaplaned, clipped the kerb and fell on it's side on the grass verge, luckily with no damage.
Them doors are heavy to open from that position.

Sadly I'm missing the 3rd row. Seatbelts are there but the seats are long gone.

Apart from the flaking wooden trim (UV damage - just needs re-varnishing), the interior is absolutely mint!

65k miles on the clock.

It's currently got some Kumho mud things on it that provide as much road feels as I would get paragliding.

I'll definitely be changing them. Worst I do is a bit of farm grass track
 
Find yourself a local fabricator & get them to make you up some thing like this along with a plate that bolts between the tow ball & bracket to slot the spigot into ( the pic shows a reducer piece as my Disco has a 2” receiver hitch ). If you need to travel on a public road you’ll need to secure the ‘load’ & probably wise to have a small tarp to put over it & lash down.

As donkey basher said above, a hitch mounted tray is the best option, have been using a Heckpack tray for a few years. Ideal for anything up to and including fallow and keeps the jeep from stinking!

I bought a pickup now as shoot reds :)

It might also be worth doing the transfer and diff oils, easy enough job and oil cheap. Lovely truck by the way!
 
I also use a heck basket, and a decathlon bag for roe and Munties.

I am also considering the hand winch for winding fallow on board. But not there yet.

That is the best way to ensure the nasties and smells are kept out. And the deer are kept clean.
I also keep a tarp, incase in case I have a big fallow and it won’t fit in the container.

Just ensure that your tow bar will be ok to 100kg down force.

I like that idea. I've a ball and pin hitch so I'd have to see what could be done there.
 
Sell the Shogun to a classic car enthusiast and buy an old pickup.

The Shoguns are getting rare now and all the hassle of running a classic applies, including finding some parts. ( a cracked windscreen would be impossible to replace.

Nice things really, and that’s a great example

why a gun safe ? just take the bolt /forend off

I've got a pickup already. Issue is, HMRC are dead against me having it. It's a work 2023 ranger Wildtrack and I'm on borrowed time because it's now apparently a car 🙄

I'll have to switch to a van and also, there's no way this is getting sold now. He was like a dad to me and to have his old Shogun and his old Browning is priceless.

Surprisingly I'm finding parts availability not too bad at all. Milners, and Jap 4x4 in London, seem to have everything I could need.

Yes, a windscreen would be an issue but there's companies out there that'll do it and it's relatively easy on the shogun because the glass is flat.

I got someone out to fix a couple of chips in it and I can't even see them now.
