first FAC query

I’d be grateful for a bit of advice on applying for my first FAC.

I’m a probationary member of a small bore club, I’ll complete the 3 months period in September and would like to get things ready for the FAC application, such as the GP proforma, for a bolt and a semi 22lr. Which I’m happy that I know the process for.

But I also want to shoot full-bore target shooting, do some of F-class, benchrest, classic military rifles and have found a club I want to join, but they don’t have club guns. So I want to join them, but ideally only once I have an FAC and can do something more involved than sit quietly and watch for the probationary period and required visits.

So I’m looking for advice on the most efficient way to get to an FAC with slots for rimfire and centrefire. I could proceed with the FAC for 22lr only, once it's granted then join the full-bore club and submit a variation, but that seems like it might annoy the licensing team if five minutes after the FEO assesses for a pair of rimfires I submit a variation that adds multiple larger calibres.

Including .308 etc in the application, on the basis of an intention to join a suitable club (and start to visit it as a non-member, which the club allows), seems a little optimistic to present as a “good reason”. I could try to join the full-bore club shortly before the FAC application is processed/FEO visit, which I’ve heard is taking 6-9 months for my local force, and ask to add additional slots to the application - but I’ve never heard of anyone asking an FEO if they can add slot(s) to an FAC application and don’t know if they have this flexibility, even if they agreed.

I know I could join the full-bore club and wait to apply for everything I want once I’m a full member, but would rather not pay to join a club I probably wouldn’t be able to shoot at for the 3 months probationary period then 6-9 months waiting for the FAC.

Is applying for 22lr and then adding others via a variation later on the best way of getting what I want?

Thanks

Do they not require that you are already a member of the HOA club that is capable of shooting the requested firearms. (Them being for target use only.)

I don't know I'm required to be a member of a HOA club, for the good character and safe handling of firearms, or if each target rifle also requires a full membership of a HOA club where it can be shot as part of its justification, as opposed to being used as a visitor etc.

If your 'sufficient reason' is TARGET SHOOTING only and you're a full member of a HOAC, you have - to the letter of the law and all legislation - fulfilled the said 'sufficient reason' criteria to apply for ALL AND ANY calibre up to the max calibre allowed by that club/range.

Asking for a 22lr only, or asking for 10 guns in 8 calibres from 22LR to 50BMG makes no difference (presuming the club, hypothetically, was rated to 50 BMG and you have the appropriate and approved safe storage to hold the majority of your requested rifles)

It's only when your 'sufficient reason' is Vermin/Fox/Deer/Boar etc OVER LAND, does the smaller calibre = more likely to get, come into play - especially on your first grant if you have zero or little prior experience.

Now, this isnt to say that individual FEO's may have their own personal interpretations and suggestions and these should never be discounted ( a positive relationship with your FEO is worth it's weight in gold), but by the letter of the law and legislation, the above is (to the best of my knowledge) the situation.

Discuss it with the FEO who contacts you regarding your intentions and be guided by them

You should get all these answers from your club during the probationary period.
However, you most likely won't be granted a full-bore slot(s) if your only HO Club only shoots small-bore, and you have not shot any full-bore.

Getting the sb FAC, then joining the fb club and applying for a variation is not a problem. The police are used to it and your circumstances can change.

Better would be to join either the fb club you want or another club that shoots what you want to shoot now, both fb and sb. You could try Diggle (www.diggleranges.co.uk iirc), they have great facilities and aren't too far from Manchester.

When you apply, just remember you don't need to apply for 22 semi-auto or 22 bolt action, just .22RF Rifle (other calibres and types are available).
