This amount of unbiased data must be an industry first. Some interesting reading here.

I absolutely cannot believe you did all that work!!! An industry first which provides the shooter with unbiased data and a pricelist to go with it!!!!

You would shooting magazines to shame with all that data and I hope you picked up your PhD on the way out. What a passion you have for your work.

Hello Mr B

Thank you for all the work and effort you have put in to providing some very interesting reading and information.

Impressive stuff. Would you be able to provide some further detail sometime on the measuring technique? e.g. Meter used, positioning, distance, settings etc.

To turn the images round, just download them onto your PC (right click & "save as") & click to open them (Windows Photo Viewer) - Then you can turn them by clicking on the curly arrows at the bottom of the screen. - When you open them subsequently, they will still be turned.

Excellent review, but can I ask a thinko question?

The Freyr & Devik 196 is listed as out of spec for calibre - does this mean the 30 cal F&D is not suited to the .308 and what conclusions does that lead to in terms of your tests?

Very interesting. Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce such a detailed analysis.

Wonder if there will be a few 1 for 1 variations going in.

The DPT double magnum moderator used on my .25-06 was fitted with a .22cal stainless baffle and 5 off, 6mm (.243cal) baffles.
Eds own F&D is also designated for a smaller cal (.270 in this case). Both moderators are therefore "out of spec for caliber".

The smaller the bore, or the closer the bore is to the bullet, the quieter the moderator will be.

No it was a fitment shortfall on my part rather than a suitability

I didnt have a 30 cal 14x1 version to use on the 308 tikka unfortunately
We ran a 1/2" 30cal rated F196 moderator on a .270 so the radial clearance was huge

The bullet is 7.04/.277 and the bore is 8.6mm - Sound attenuation as a result was only 21dB
Bore = 8.6mm
Calibre = 7.04mm
Clearance 0.78mm
Sound attenuation = 21.41 dB

Compare to the same moderator in .22 form on the 6mmBR
Bore = 6.5mm
Calibre = 6.17mm
Clearance = 0.165mm
Sound Attenuation 27.40

This level is higher than all the other mods in the "in spec" 30cal on a 30cal list.

given that 3dB is double the noice
thats a 6dB difference just changing the hole size
