About 2 months ago I received my Svemko Hunter 1.0 moderator
Kindly donated by Edgar Brothers, the UK distributor
Svemko are the latest in a long line of Scandinavian moderator manufacturers and they produce a wide range of lightweight CF mods made from Titanium and Aluminium
Unboxing reveals a slim and light anodised aluminium mod.
No different to many others
It feels “thinner” in the material walls and body of the unit.
Disassembly using the provided hex tool reveals a baffle stack that appears to be swaged or crimped together
The first baffle protrudes backwards and seals the centre hole in the rear tube assembly when screwed together.
The rear tube assembly holds the thread for the muzzle or in this case the universal Quick Detach adapter
This is a very neat interrupted threaded section with a conical mating surface to the rear which automatically centres the mod on the corresponding muzzle mounted adapter.
The adapter stays on the rifle and is tightened using the internal hex and an allen key.
You could take it off and on to lean the thread and crown but that will be leas frequent.
I have three muzzle adapters and the mod now runs on my:
6.5 Grendel, 260 Rem and 6.5-284
Over the course of the last few weeks i have put several hundred rounds through it, including a range session this week that was 100+ rounds in approximately 45 mins
First impressions
The lock up and fitting of the moderator to the rifle is a dream.
Slide on
1/4 turn
The mod self tightens when firing so always feels slightly tighter to remove after firing than it was when fitted
No more loose mods
When I went to rezero all the rifles shot to approximately 1-3cm higher than before but no lateral shift at all.
A fluke anomaly but interesting nonetheless
The noise is very different. Hard to show on a video.
It has a distinct woosh and whistle to the signature
Its very quiet.
Certainly the quietest I have owned and run next to my 6mm rated DPT, which I though was already very quiet.
This makes it sound like a coke can.
It does get hot very quickly but equally it cools down very quickly. A consequence of low thermal mass.
I am not one for stripping and cleaning mods (and neither should you be !) but did so this time to examine the internals and also look at any erosion.
I am not sure but fairly confident that most of the baffles are aluminium with the first one The bullet passes through definitely being titanium
Regardless, bore scope showed zero erosion on any leading edge of any of the baffles
In contrast my DPT and other aluminium baffled mods show significant erosion and putting to the edges os the bore within a similar number of rounds.
Very impressive
I will monitor this over the coming months but initial observations show a very resilient design and material
Whilst they seem expensive in the £7-800 mark across the range.
Consider this
I was running three moderators on two different muzzle threads
I now run one.
The combined value of several middle of the road mods is significantly higher than one Svemko
The QD system works extremely well and allows one mod to be used across a range of rifles.
If you were willing to sacrifice some performance running a 30cal you could easily cover a wide range of cartridges with one mod
I am also fairly convinced that a 30cal Svemko run on a 6.5 cartridge would be quieter than a 6.5 rated mod of another brand run on the same 6.5, as demonstrated with my side by side comparison with my aready out of spec 6mm on a 6.5 cartridge.
All in very impressive
