‘Pointing’ Canopy Squirrels

Shot a few squirrels on the syndicate recently, what is interesting is that I can read when one is in the canopy now from watching the young dog (not pictured) showing scent on the trunk. My pal says that I’m like a sight hound, 300 yard sprint if I see a tree rat on the deck to blast it before it gets to the safety of a hollow.

I love this picture. It's like he's looking at you not sure whether he's going to get praised or bollocked and saying 'It was this one wasn't it????'

Love it!

They are often not dead, and there is admittedly some risk to the dogs’ eyes but the tree rats tend to bite the lips when picked properly about the chest. These are thick-skinned dogs, they aren’t fazed by a bit of rough play from the squirrels and crows.

However, I do appreciate that others wouldn’t make the same choices, same as picking up foxes or jumping fences, and likewise appreciate highlighting the dangers of such approach, taking it as well intentioned and helpful 👍
Granny & eggs, but watch the dogs picking squirrels, if not dead they have a viscous nip!

Only mention it as back in the day we used to use squirrels to train the terriers as they had a good bite but less chance of the dog getting something nasty from the bite.

I almost lost a baby squirrel to the puppy retrieve, swallowed whole, much to my boys’ laughter. It was recovered from the dog’s throat jut in time by preventing the gulp reflex and grasping the end whiskers of a tail just poking out the corner of its mouth 🙈
I feed whole skinned squirrels to mine fairly regularly, thats if i dont fancy them stewed
