1970's - 1980's hunting scopes

How did we ever manage to shoot anything with such primitive optics?

According to many on SD we couldn’t possibly shoot anything without a fully modern digital optic costing several thousand pounds on top of a 6.5 creedmoor or peoples republic of china (thats what PRC stands for) chambered rifle. Indeed how did stalkers ever achieve culls of 200, 300 or 400 hinds with such kit between 20th October and 15th February?

Never used a scope at all before coming to UK. Only visiting hunters used them,we could never figure out why you wanted a scope in bush. Fair enough after the bushfires had been through but stuff soon grows back.
I watched a video on YouTube about a chap hunting elephant in the Zambezi valley. It charged and despite the PH shouting "shoot it", he never got a round off. The PH dropped it, close too. The chap actually said " I couldn't pick it up in the scope."
However here different thing,be difficult to shoot deer early and late without using scope.

Ah - that is mounted nice and low - now reminds me I need to avoid big objective lens scopes. I assume the front scope mount is a P-H BA.28.
If it was a No4 it would be a BA.21 rear, what is fitted here for the SMLE?

Again all responses really appreciated.
The rail is a PA 24 and the rings both 3901A - one with a recoil lug and one without.

I've attached a few pictures, the image through the scope looks fuzzy in the foreground by the post and barbed wire but is not like that to look through in real life, just the phone camera!

For reference the sheep nearest the crosshair is 163 yards!
