1lb powders for 308

Hi all

Want to try out reloading but the price of 1kg tubs of powders is putting me off. I’m just wanting to make up a few hunting rounds with my Lee Loader for my .308. Likely with non-lead eg TTSX or Fox 130gr.

Any tips on which 1lb tub powders might work? The different varieties and acronyms are rather confusing! Seems Ramshot and Hodgson make these smaller tubs which are more accessible to someone dipping their toe in the water. Better than spending £100+ on something that gets used once then gathers dust!

Cheers!

In 308 you have a wide choice of powders without getting it wrong.
Print off a burn rate chart.
Look at the powders around h4895 higher or lower on the chart.
See what is available to you close to 4895 then Google the option you have for loads in 308.

Norma 201, 202 Viht N135, N140 try to buy a powder you can regularly find available. Having a few pounds of powder for your favorite loads are great if the supply chain are having problem like it has been from US.

With the current trade tariff shenanigans I’d definitely be using a European powder (like Viht) and f I were developing a load from scratch!

To be honest Viht has been my powder of choice for 12 / 14 years because of the stability of supply. I also get through it at a fair rate so buying 1 or 3.5kg canisters made more sense. I defer to US products for a lot of shooting related stuff, but powder is not one of them.

Only problem with Viht N135 is I can’t find 1lb tubs, only 1kg which doubles the cost. Might just have to save up some pennies and get the right one!

Bearing in mind the shelf life is likely 20 years plus, it's a wise investment.
If money's really that tight and you find yourself my way, I'll give you some powder to get you going.

Worst scenario is if you don’t get on with reloading and or N135, put it up for sale in the classifieds - someone will have it off you. However it really performs well with those 125 - 140 copper bullets (and brass LOS) so I’m sure you’ll go well with it. Think of the saving over factory ammo!

Just called them and the website is broken, they do have stock, so I’ll get 1kg of N135 and some Fox .30 cal 130gr bullets!
Vhit N140 also works well with .308 and 130gr TTSX bullets. Easily push 3,000fps and accurate. I do have a long barrel though (26") so a (slightly) slower powder isn't an issue.

The 1kg tubs actually work out cheaper than the 1 lbs american stuff.

Viht N-140 will get you about 360 shots of a 168 grain projectile.

Works out to about 30 pence per charge at 43.5 grains (what i use for 168 grain HPBT) I bought a 3.5 kg Jug for 340 quid (Club supplier) Works out to 27 pence per charge ~
