1st two fox cubs of the year

Got a call this morning 2 x Fox Cubs , caught in live cage trap.
Around 6 weeks old out foraging , early this year.
That's unusual and about 6 (ish) weeks early! But we heard and saw foxes together in November and it's been a mild winter?

Mentioned on another form , i shot a vixen 3rd week in january and it was suckling cubs , i was ridiculed by a few , but ive only been foxing for around 40 years and this is deffo the earliest ive seen cubs out of the den in February

I'm suddenly seeing very few foxes and the ones that I am seeing are travelling determinedly and not calling in. Two nights ago one of them had a rabbit in its mouth. I think on my patch (east Berkshire) the vixens are now underground, so cubs will be soon.

ive not shot any pregnant vixens this year but am noticing a lack of foxes in general over the last couple of weeks
i saw three last night but only one was in range (shot at 210yd)
those cubs are well early especially that far north

Same had a good run of 33 on my patch now just the odd dog vixens underground here too

Fantastic. Like others have already mentioned I also witness foxes paired up early November, and this last week I've noticed "known" foxes dissappear which I assumed myself were now to ground with cubs. The last three years have shown dramatic change compared to previous years regarding early breeding, and the number of litters per vixen per year. I often see two litters but last year believe i was coming across litter number three, or very very late litter number two.!

a mate of mine shot a heavily pregnant vixen Friday evening which is the first one this year
but last year as you say there seemed to be a lot of foxes about

As vixens only come into season once a year, it's hard to see how they could have more than one litter! Incidentally, dog foxes are unable to breed much after March until the following November at the earliest.

Do you know if vixens adopt litters..?? I know for a fact I've seen one particular vixen with a litter of four, then later in the season the same vixen with litter of three.! In the end the public farm asked if I'd take care of the vixen and the seven cubs, which were months apart in age 🤔

I've seen a couple of instances where two litters have joined up, not necessarily of the same age. I can imagine that if one of the vixens was shot then the other would continue bringing up the two litters.
The family set up of foxes is far more complex than most people realise and certainly, there are overlaps especially where cubs are involved.
