22.250 VS 223

The cost of buying another rifle; mod, scope, etc will be significantly more than just shooting foxes with your 308, so not sure it takes sense to say the 308 costs too much to use foxing.

Cost aside, if you just WANT a middle ground calibre for foxing, 223 should for the bill lovely, but any of the mid range calibres will do the job just fine.

I've two 223 rifles. Sako85 ss laminate and sako85 hunter. And never felt the need for a longer range calibre like the 22-250. But if your shooting in large open areas, then go for it. Most of my shots are 180yards max.

Have you considered trying something along the lines of the Hornady V Max, 110 grain, in the .308? Certainly save the cost of buying additional equipment.

When both are zeroed at 200 yards, the tables say that the 22-250 will be 2 inches higher than the 223 at 300 yards. Is that worth the 28 pence a round in barrel wear besides the extra powder?

.308 is a big ricochet risk vs a .22 centrefire. Particularly a 22-250.
Somthing quite special about the 250 It was my first centre fire calibre and I really enjoyed owning it and took a lot of foxes with it.
That being said if you’re not bothered about the calibre remember it’s the bullet that kills. A 40grn v max in a fox at 200m is lethal, whether it’s launched by hornet, .222 .223 or 22-250!

Well, your question has raised a lot discussion and debate. There are pro's and con's for both. I can see no real winner. However, I think that whichever one you choose will be the right one for you. Its like having a child, you do not mind if it is a boy or a girl !

I get to shoot various calibers, 22.250 more legs more clout, 223 a good all round goat rifle, 222 in my opinion a noisey son of a bitch, all killed goats out to 300 yds, I just got a second hand 300 blk out in with 50 rounds of ammo , that’s my next toy to try.

.204 very fast, cheap to feed will shoot further very accurately than you will want to and it will knock foxes over all day

In real world terms the range is more down to the Nut behind the butt. A certain member on here won the FTR one year with what was basically a 223 and that's an event really decided at 800-1000 yards. Of course the 22-250 cut to take the same high BC bullet might well have been even better but it wouldn't be allowed in FTR lol

22,250 is my favourite calibre. Don't be worried about using more powder if you reload. 223 of course uses less powder, but It's not like your going range shooting with it.

50 grain blizking or nostlers was mustard on foxes. Mine was a 1 in 12 twist 24 inch barrel. Was spitting out the nostlers at close to 3800+ fps on the chrono and with deadly accuracy

So confident with it when out lamping foxes.
I'm sure the 223 could do the same it's the guy behind the gun.

But as I said, ive a soft spot for 22,250
Good luck on your purchase

Got to be the man's .22.....it's 22/250 all day for me. Coupled with 55gn v-max it's devastating on foxes. Had two over last 20yrs and they're fast, very accurate and great fun to shoot

I'd just use the 308.
I shot hundreds of fox's with one using 110gn v max.
By the time you've bought another rifle, scope and ammo you could of saved a fortune after you bought reloading gear, powder and bullets.

Evening all,

Im wanting a middle ground rifle between my 17.hmr and 308win. 17 is fantastic for rabbits squirrels ect. However on foxes on prefer something thats packs abit more punch. 308
Is way to expensive to be shooting foxes with alot and its abit too big for it.
Just wanting people’s thoughts on if i should go for 223 or 22.250 ? Thanks in advance
Neither.
