can anyone help with a load for a 220 swift using Barnes 50gn varmint grenade heads and how far off the lands for a starting point

I've got some of these bullets but I'm waiting for a fast twist barrel before I can use them.

I would start at 2.650" OAL that's in the Barnes data for the rest of their bullets providing that they chamber in your rifle. Don't try them if you have a standard 1:14 twist barrel.

yes i have 1x14 twist (is that too slow for these bullets)

For vermin I can’t go past Vmax in the swift with your twist. For deer or lead free, TTSX with the tips pulled are emphatic on roe (up here in Jockistan) and fox/ hare etc

ok i currently use 55gn bt and N160 powder but i managed to get a couple of boxes of the 50gn vg heads at a very cheap price and i thought i would try them. I am going to now go to the reloading shed and determine the twist of the barrel and i will get back to you

I think the barrel burner image of the Swift is now an urban myth.
Early days (1935), it probably was, barrels have moved on a little since then.
Not much difference from the 22.250.
My brother has a Ruger MK11, he purchased it new, god knows how long ago, and has shot over 4k through the original tube, it's still a tack driver.

I had one as my everyday rifle in the gator (keeper), bought second hand with a border barrel on it, I put north of 4000 through mine, don’t know what the previous owner put through it. Would have another tomorrow 👍
