223 or 243

Hi guys,
What’s the best foxing calibre 223 or 243 and why? I have a decision to make soon and I want to get it right! Many thanks in advance!

Think of a 243 for foxing as a 22-250 on steroids with a light bullet (55-70gr) that you can also use on any deer in the UK, even with non toxic now the Scottish legislation has changed.

What’s not to love about that. I also come from the belief that the more you shoot a rifle the better you get with it which is why I fox and stalk with my 243 and just switch between NV or traditional scope with the appropriate round for what I’m doing on my R8.

It’s probably a touch more noisy than some other calibres at night but thats not a concern for me and it’s laser accurate way past 200m.

Hope this helps and have fun making your decision.

unless you are going to shoot deer or shoot long range, inside 200m i cant see any fox being able to tell the diffrence. both have good ammo choices that most places will stock.

243 for its versatility.
Was using mine yesterday: Started the day with a fallow pricket, head shot at just over 100 yards, and ended the day with a fox, chest shot at just over 200 yards. 58grn superperformance v-max for both.
Really nice easy shooting calibre.

Foxing .... well 223 must be ideal. Short barrel, low noice with moderator and ammo (v-max) everywhere.
The sound factor is important if the rifle is to used dark hours. No need to alarm people living close.

I recently bought a 223 for foxing with NV as my 243 setup was too heavy etc.

Nice light rifle with a Alpex has been very good but it hasn’t done anything the 243 couldn’t have done just not quite as loud but it’s not exactly quiet either.

I am in agreement with the above that having one rifle that you shoot well is a big advantage and I think that’s where the 243 shines as it is a great foxing calibre that can be used to take any deer species in the U.K.

It’s a real shame that the 223 (and other 22 cals) aren’t allowed to take Roe deer. It’s more than capable and used in Scotland as well as some other countries abroad. You can already take munty and CWD with it, adding Roe would just open it up to being a lot more versatile.

Either one will kill foxes stone dead if you put the bullet in the correct place.

No, I have different rifles for that. Foxing only.
So not going to worry about barrel wear and not going to want to use heavy bullets.
Both my 223s are 1-in-8 twists and seem to handle 40gr to 80gr OK.
A local chap swears by 58gr in his 243.
I've never shot a 243!
Cost per shot will be the main difference between the two, I would think.
