.243 Rifle choice

Thanks to Andy and Gary from Moray outfitters for letting me try a couple of Sako's and a Howa, I really liked the Sako action and feel. Problem now is that I also liked the wood stalk I know that the synthetic is more practical but it gives me something else to think about. Thanks again for all the advice

i se heym rifles never get a mention ,are they thought to be non starters, years back i had a sr20 243 ,a great tool never managed to get both wings off a gnat ,one wing off plenty of times. the issue sights were all i used.

Choosing a rifle depends so much upon what you personally want and feel. Most rifles today will do the job out of the box and if not need very little "Tweaking" to achieve exactly what you are looking for. Just look at how many rifles have been mentioned favourably in this post!
Have a look around and if possible try as many as possible before making your decision.
I rushed out and bought a Howa in .243. The problem is that I really want a Sako 85 Finnlight. The reason that I don't change one for the other is that quite honestly I can't fault the Howa! It is a great little rifle and has taken many deer without any problem. It is therefore difficult to justify the extra expense for the Sako.
Take your time and look around. You'll know what you want when you see it!

Have a look at the Varberger for sale in the classifieds. I know it's an unusual make but they are meant to be very good. By the way I have no connection to whoever is selling it!

Hello, I am looking to buy my first new .243 rifle for fox and deer stalking (just got my FAC), I have been looking at tikka T3 lite s/s and x-bolt stainless fluted synthetic. I have also started looking at the sako A7 as I like the safety that lets you open the bolt when the safety is still engaged, same as the browning. Is the A7 worth the extra money? or do you think it's better to save up a bit more dosh and go for the sako 85 s/s. This is my first rifle and I don't won't to buy again so if I have to wait a while longer I don't mind. There are a lot of reviews on these rifles, does it just come down to what feels right or is one technically better than the other

Thanks'
hi mate buy a tikka t3 s/s Ive got a 243 and love it,now I'm on look out to buy 308 Tikka t3 light s/s.but they seem to be hard to find in that caliber at moment without getting it sent up from down south to a dealer up here .May sell my 243 it had about 80 to 100 round through it or even the full kit ,eg mod scope mounts etc

Hi Big Cat

You are not the only one so don’t take this as criticism, more an observation of people’s behaviour. Although I have to note that one or two are selling a rifle they are recommending to the OP.:suss:

That aside a lot of people just recommend the rifle they own and have never used any of the other manufactures the original OP asked about. The trouble is I always think that for some people shooting there first deer is like have good sex for the first time, most young lads fall for that lass. Somebody shoots a deer or two with that make of rifle and then thinks it is the bee’s knees.

In truth with any modern rifle you will shoot just as many,or just as few  with whatever one you choose to carry. Nothing wrong with Tikkas the 595/695 were better engineered, although not any more accurate than the latter T3s.

hi jodi
i have had a t3 .243 light s/s and have a sako 85 s/s in .308 both are very nice . i would have the t3stainless light there is a deal on them at the mo from gmk inc scope and rings rec price £1200 but have a look around, mags are around 40ish & the sako is £1600/£1500 plus rings plus scope mags over a £100 if you can find them so your choice but look around for best deal. get good glass and rings to match your rifle cheap is not always the best deal and it will be a big regret when the light is poor or woodland stalking. go to a range day try before you buy don't go for the top flyers just because a pal has one, just a word on remingtons thay have a long freebore so are fussy to do reloading on unless its an old one .old tikkas are well built

have fun best of luck on your 1st deer with your choice of rifle

I've decided on the Sako 85 S/S, but if shooting your first deer is like the first time you have sex then it better have a hair trigger

well done good choice mine has a S&B 8X56 Knock em flat in low light ,that trigger is fully ajustable from mag well but if i was you leave it alone as its very good at factory setting mine is set at 1&1/4 pull enjoy your rifle and most of all enjoy your 1st outing.:hind:

Go with the sako, I have an 85sx s/s and it's an amazing gun, looked at the t3 but felt plastic

You don’t have to explain yourself to me mate, obviously there is some irony off people recommending rifles they are selling and you aren’t the only one.

T3s are ok, shame they didn’t have a 3 lug bolt instead of a basic 2 lug though, I wished the action length matched the cartridge size instead of using a long action for all calibres then putting a cheap bolt stop in to make it work with a short action cartridge too. The plastic bits should really be steel IMO, the mag’ errrr well if it was flush fitting and held 5 instead of three that would be better for hinds and roe does with twins, but it would have to be a stainless steel one not cheap plastic. That alloy recoil lug, well I have heard that they wear and you need a proper engineered ground steel one. Still put a good barrel on a bit of mild steel tube and it will shoot well.

I wonder why Sakos cost more that Tikkas?

shame i cant afford one, will need to muddle along with my tikka:thumb:

No worries, to much time spent on the gucci gear and trying to improve it;) and not enough and trying to make the most important part work better, the nut behind the butt.

I can honestly say that I have never got one less deer because I had a PH or Howa or Tikka or any other rifle you care to think over a more expensive one.

Have fun
