Hi all,
Going to start reloading for my 270 now i have some fire formed brass, my question is... what in your experiences would be the best bullet for mainly roe at under 200 yards?
am i better going heavier and slower or lighter and faster?

many thanks

Used 110 sierra prohunters and 10 vmax to great effect.... no more meat damage than heavier bullets.

I would tend to say it doesn’t really matter.

If you hit the shoulder or go too far back, it will be nasty more or less regardless of what you pick. A clean chest shot will be fine, again more or less regardless of what you use.

Though i’d avoid SSTs or VMAX, since they seem to increase the risk of puncturing the rumen even with good chest shots.

I think that they were both hovering about 3 shots into 1" at 100m.

This is the result from what Rory (takbok) sent me, 150 sieria game king @ 100 yds

From 60 yard Muntjac to Fallow over 250.

Mine is a 1:10 twist Tikka T3. 150gr Sierra Gameming @ 2850fps. Never tried the Gameking on deer but used 150gr Norma bullets at 2650fps satisfactorily on Roe.

Tim's Remington will be 1:10 too. Perfectly adequate for conventional 150gr bullets.

Don’t worry so much about bullet weight- consider the construction of the bullet more.
The Norma 130 grain SP actually has a plated steel jacket rather than a copper one and does expand but holds together well. I like it in my 270 very much for Roe.

I always used PPU 130g Softpoints for roe and for culling other deer through my Steyr Mannlicher. It gave me a 1 inch group at 100 yards so it was plenty accurate enough for me!
It is always worth trying PPU ammunition in whatever rifle you have as if they group well enough they can save you quite a few pounds (Depending on how many rounds you get through)

I have used sierra game kings for a long time they always seem ok to me in 130g out of a sauer 202.

I shoot these as well from my Howa. Tried the Norma and didnt make any difference. I do find they open up a bit at 200 yards though but no more than anything else I used.

Any soft point 130 grain that is accurate from your barrel, I favour Nosler Partitions, some will complain about cost, I reckon cost not an issue, for how many deer you gonna shoot.

I use 130gr sierra gamekings out of mine for everything

+1 on this bullet. I have just developed a load for a guy's 270 using these bullets and RS 60 in his Steyr Stutzen. On an OCW test the best trio gave a .472". No mod so hat + defenders :D

No chance - It's a copper jacket, or gilding metal to be more precise.

Perhaps you should tell the Norma 130 grain SP attached to a fridge magnet in this photo that it does not have a coated steel jacket.
Sorry the photo is on its side
