30-06 none lead recommendations.

I am looking for recommendations on none lead ammo for my 30-06.
At present I shoot Norma soft tip 150grn
My quarry is generally Roe out to around 150yrds
I am considering going lead free with lighter loads.
Anyone using lead free with lighter loads?
What are your experiences?
What are the pro’s and con’s

There was a post earlier this week asking the same question for .308. Answer will be practically the same. Personally I’d try a Fox 130gn or if you want more penetration a 150. No heavier for UK species.

I returned to this project and did a few more test rounds using slightly stouter loads.

Whereas the Virtus osprey 150gr + 49gr N540 gave me a similar POI to another load I use throwing the 180gr Barnes ttsx, it does not deliver the best group.

So what if I forsake the quest for common point of impact across all loads and rather aim for best grouping in all loads? [I.e. adjust sighting point on scope when switching between loads]

Today is very encouraging. The 50gr N540 load under Virtus osprey 150gr delivered this three-shot sampler at 100m:

This - love the 120gr version in the 6.5CM.

Otherwise factory 150gr Barnes TTSX - went to the range earlier - 3 shots within a 10p piece at 100m.

Neither are cheap, but then again, nothing is these days.

I’m looking to fill a gap between .308 and .300WM with a .30-06, it’s one chambering I’ve never had.

I’m generally a big fan or lighter, faster copper (130’s in .308) however with the .30-06 I’m planning to start with 165 Fox bullets. Will be interesting to see how they perform on Roe.

Only way you going to do that is home load.

And you’ll only save money if loading in volume to offset the cost of the kit, 20 rounds a month staking isn’t worth it.

Barnes 130 grain ttsx and vihtavuori. Found them extremely accurate and killed all the deer I've shot at so far

I have Yew Tree 145 grain in my 30-06 very accurate. I have only shot one Roe and one Red but both dropped on the spot.
49 grains Vit N150. They do need to be seated back off the lands as they like a jump.

I have used this combination for three years on everything, muntjac , roe, sika and red. Works a treat with not to much carcass damage. Plus Richard at yew tree is incredibly helpful/ knowledgeable.

I use Yew Tree in both my .25-06 and .308. Most of my stalking is close up so I tend to use a heavier bullet in my .308 and run it gently. I've found the Yew Trees to expand reliably at quite low velocities.

Besides that, they're UK made and Richard is incredibly kind if you ever need help with your loads. I only buy other brands if it's for a calibre he doesn't offer.

ammo or porjectiles you can homeload?
If ammo you local supply will be the limiting factor

130gr range you are turning the 06 into a 270 with 3000+FPS MV
thats a bruising round on a roe

150gr at moderate velocity would be my personal choice

Nothing in the UK needs heavier for penetration IMO
if you want to slow it down to preserve some carcase quality that is different

some good ammo available for the 06 from Geco, S&B, Fox, Peregrine, Sako, Hornady etc
