Hi Nutty, I hunted Wildebeast with this round and bullet wieght it worked just fine. For what its worth I think 180 is probably heavy enough and next time I go I will use 165 grn in my 30-06. Last time I shot Impala,Warthog,Bushbuck, Wildebeast,Baboon and Blesbock. 180grn dropped all these no problem.

The .30-06 with a good quality partition bullet will take most african plains game. Many of our clients use this round.
 
As I said Im thinking about putting in for a variation, Im wanting to keep my 25-06 that was the thinking about getting a 30-06. But what I keep telling myself is that Im a 1 rifle person.. Ive had a 2 rifle set up before and 1 has always lay and gathered dust!!! Now I had another thought last night and perhaps stcik with the 1 rifle and either get a 7-08 or a 308 instead. Im hoping to do Africa in the next couple of years as itll take some saving. My planned quarry is steenbok, impala, Springbok and perhaps a Blue Wilde Beast. I believe the 25-06 would be good for the 1st 3 but the Wilde Beast would be a no go..

you can argue calibres from here to eternity, but the truth and reality is that a 30-06 is probably one of the most time tested all rounders, from 130g on varmint, to 150-180g for deer, and up to 220g for boar of bigger plains game. Hemmingway even used his on cape buffallo. you can get ammo anywhere, and there's a thousand and one reloading recipes as well as endless supply of great bullets. Resale potential is always good, you can re-barrel up to a 338-06 (if you want), etc. etc.

like I'm sure Bewsher is about to say..."only to be superceded by the .270Win"....however, that's of course incorrect ;)
 
i have shot every british speices with mu 30.06 and some big highland cattle too! cant fault mine going to take it nz and africa over the next couple of years.
 
Happy days I will get a barrel kit for the Savage and change barrels. The 30-06 would be only perhaps on for 6 weeks during the Autumn plus itll do for Plains Game if I ever manage...

I am sitting under my son's 48" Kudu bull on the wall shot with 117gr Barnes xxx in your 25.06 calibre. No worries but you need bullets that pentrate and are placed correctly. Personally I use 150gr in 30.06 for everything upto DG and the flatter shooting round the better especially for some of the species you want. Plains game can be long range - I shot a springbok at 378 metres !
 
The one problem your going to have is when you get set up with the 30-06, your other calibre rifles will become redundant,mine did.
